I live in San Francisco, where it sometimes seems as if the best way to enjoy healthy, affordable meals is to stay at work all day and into the night. That is, if you are fortunate enough to get healthy food at work.
Did you know, San Francisco has community gardens where you can grow your own food in small quantities. There’s even a good-size urban farm, Alemany farm, where they teach how to grow your own food. When you see the windmill from Alemany Boulevard, you’re close.
What if you already ate what you’ve grown or didn’t have time to grow anything? That’s why I love San Francisco’s very special Free Farm Stand, held Sundays in Parque Ninos Unidos.
Here’s how it works: you show up before noon to get your numbered (free) ticket, then come back after 1 PM when the Farm Stand opens. It’s easy to meet people in the ticket line. Between noon and 1PM, I often hang out in the nearby “all in common” community garden.Mr Tree started both this garden and the Free Farm Stand.
“Tree” is a human Garden Encyclopedia and knows how to find fruits and herbs growing all over San Francisco. As at Alemany farm, you can volunteer at the community garden or the Free Farm Stand. I love the taste of this organic food, I love meeting new friends, and I love this weekly escape from the world of money.
