When I try to upload photos or videos to a location from the Page’s “add photos” button, the suggestion section of the post used to pull up pictures from my camera. Since the update to Android 10, nothing is suggested when I choose to upload a photo or video to a location.
Moreover, when I go into Google photos and choose Google Maps from the share menu, a location is not automatically recommended to me from the pictures geotag information. In the past, Google maps would use the photos’ location to approximate the location I’m trying to upload to. I have videos examples of these problem, but I could not upload them here. Any fixes on the way?
Thank you for your input, but I think you misunderstand my problem. I have no problems with the notifications, I’m having trouble posting images with locations.
My question is: why you don’t receive a notification?
Normally this situation is caused by one of the following setting:
Geotag is off
The setting for receiving notification for the photo on locations is off
Based on this analysis, I suggested you to check the setting. If everything is correct in your setting, you may have something that need to be cleaned and submitted again. In this case you can try this procedure:
Thanks for following up. My version of the maps app does not have a “geotag” setting in any of the rows or subsettings. I only have a location setting that links out into the new locations system settings, and I have location on there. My camera app has a geotag setting, and it is on there. Regarding the maps app, I have all the notifications unaltered and on. I know this because I logged out and deleted storage for maps, which also cleared the cache.
My guess is that the sharing or some other widget is malfunctioning or is encountering a bug since the update to Android 10. There is probably going a new method of Google integration intended to be released with Pixel 4 and contributing to maps, hence the new beta for uploading photos and videos on the “your contributions” page. Here’s more details about my pixel 2 machine.
Hello @Lo0
I am trying to recreate your problem.
I selected a photo lacking any Geo-tag.
Now, there is a drop-down menu (inverted blue triangle) asking me to select a suitable place. A click on that suggests some approximate guess or asks me “Some where else”?
first of all please use @ (filling the pop-up with the username of the person you are referring to, to send a notification. In this way it will be easy to not miss your reply.
Please tap on Google Location Setting to give access to your position
Hi @C_T thanks for checking. I do have the triangle that leads to a list with the last option of “somewhere else”, but the generated suggested list is of locations me is in real-time rather than the location near where the photo was tak
As an important note, this only happens to my pixel 2. I have a Samsung device that is connected via Google account and when I download photos to my Samsung via “save to device” in the Google photos app and share from photos to maps, the photo’s tagged location is suggested (correctly). This implies that the method of storage for photos for the pixel 2 build has changed from Android 9 where the app is not sensing that the photo is on the “hard disk” despite taking the photo on my pixel 2! This hypothesis is furthered by the fact that the pixel 2 file explorer is redesigned with Android 10. Sounds like a bug if you ask me or an unintentional change.
@ErmesT thanks for the suggestions for clarity. I have enabled locations to Google assistant, maps, and photos to each apps’ to the highest level as allowed by the system. Please see the images below.
Guessing my problem is a fringe case or dead in the water. For any Google support angels still out there looking into it, one interesting bypass is when I edit reviews>add photos. Going with this path pulls all my photos to the suggestions like before!
So something is happening within the app or backend it seems. Complicated to say the least
Update: I think I know what’s wrong! Android 10 forces apps to use “scoped storage” and that is interfering with Google maps and file access. Is there another place to report this issue or bug, or am I in the right place, @ErmesT ?
Update #2: the Google maps update version 10.26.2 now has access to storage! However, geotagging is still broken from Google photos link out. Such growing pains from updating. Glad updates are rolling out.
Great! Hopefully these issues can be resolved. Based on my limited testing, I believe it to be a result of the telescoping storage scheme that Android 10 uses that interferes with the apps’ ability to use the data from photos to approximate the location.
The problem persists when sharing a backed up file from Google photos to maps WITHOUT first downloading the photo onto the phone (see bypass method below). Google photos will auto-download the back up, but not use the geolocation data from the backed up file.
This is bypassed if you download the backed up photo within Google photos first via the “…”, download the single file manually, and then share the photo to maps. This way will still use the geolocation data from the backed up photo.
