Is it possible to update a place from temporarily closed to permanently closed? When I tried to updated the status in Google Maps, the only option was to list it as re-open.
As far as I see, @KSKS , this is indeed only possible as a 2 step process: mark it as open first to remove the temporary closed status, and then - once the edit is approved - mark it as permanently closed.
A bit bizarre but currently the only option. My personal experience with that type of edits, however, is that they get approved quite quickly.
Hi @KSKS
Yes, this is possible, but you need to reopen the place before you can suggest a place permanently closed.
In my experience reopening a place takes only 1-5 minutes to get approved.
But since Google Maps is running on several servers it typically can take some hours before you will see the change when browsing the map.
Instead, and to speed up the process, you can follow the link in the email you get. The link is called See your changes. This will make it possible to reach the reopened place straight away and you can then suggest a permanent closure.
I hope this helps.
Cheers
Hi @KSKS
With the pandemic, Google My Business flagged as “temporary closed” a lot of businesses, country by country, according to the Local Government decisions.
Unfortunately a side effect of this was that many businesses that were already “permanently closed” changed to “temporary closed”. It happened to me with business closed by myself on the last years.
Actually the only option that you have is the one already mentioned by @MortenCopenhagen and @JanVanHaver : a two steps procedure to:
- Re-open the business
- Flag the business as “permanently closed”
Normally, if a business was already permanently closed before the pandemic, the whole process is approved in minutes
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. As recommended, I tried updating it to open first then permanently closing. It worked but seems like a odd way to update.
Hi @KSKS ,
Thanks for reaching out to us! As already suggested, this two-steps procedure is the only option available. I am glad to see it already worked.
I also wanted to let you know that I just marked @JanVanHaver 's answer as solution, in order to be beneficial for other Local Guides with the same question.
To know more about it, you can read the following article: How do I mark comments as solutions?
Hello.
I found an object that is marked as temporarily closed in G maps /because of Covid-19, I think/.
But in real life this object now is empty - as it is in the picture. They are closed permanently. The place is for rent.
How to change that - I see the only option is to open it - to mark it as working and after that to make it permanently closed.
Any ideas?
Thank you!
Thank you, @MortenCopenhagen !!
I got it.

Thank you, all.
Hi @BorislavA ,
Thank you for reaching out!
I’d like to inform you, that I’m merging your post to Updating to Permanently Closed, as @MortenCopenhagen already mentioned, you can get the relevant answer from there.
The posted solution works fine, I’m sure, in busy, metropolitan areas. However, in the more rural areas of the UK, those changes don’t get approved in minutes and users are left being misled. It strikes me as odd that there’s no option of setting a simple flag to alert users to a location being permanently closed.
Would seem a simple programing fix so that we don’t have to take two steps. Make it frictionless!
