Untouched beauty of Konkan – ‘Ratnagiri’

Hello to all the Moderators and Local Guide friends!

Today I am going to tell you about our family tour to ‘Ratnagiri’ district in Maharashtra state of India. We have visited ‘Ratnagiri’ several times before and we went there again recently to attend a family function.

‘Ratnagiri’ is located on the southwest part of Maharashtra and it is surrounded by beautiful hills of ‘Sahyadri’ ranges on one side and on another by ‘Arabian Sea’ with untouched white beaches, beautiful waterfalls, hot water springs and palm groves. ‘Alphonso’ mangoes of Ratnagiri are very famous in Maharashtra. ‘Ratnagiri’ is one of the gems of ‘Konkan’ region. It is a joyful weekend getaway from different cities of Maharashtra including Mumbai.

During this visit, we went to the 3 most famous tourist spots here. Today I am going to talk about these wonderful places.

Ganapatipule:-

‘Ganapatipule’ is about 25 km away from Ratnagiri city. It is famous for the ‘Lord Ganesha Temple’ which is situated right on the beach and surrounded by a hillock. Thousands of pilgrims from all over Maharashtra come here every month to gain blessings from ‘Lord Ganesha’ on ‘Sankashti Chaturthi’ [Holy day of Lord Ganesh]. There is a wonderful walkway around the temple; the experience of taking a tour around the temple along this walkway was unforgettable for us.

On the way to Ganapatipule, the roadside sceneries are very wonderful with narrow roads, red soil and roofed houses. Ganpatipule is the jewel in Ratnagiri district. We have visited Ganapatipule several times before, and like other times we enjoyed a lot this time too.

How to Reach:- From Ratnagiri MSRTC bus stand one can get bus to Ganpatipule.

Auto-rickshaws are also available; they will charge around Rs.400/- for 3 persons.

Aare-Ware beach:-

‘Aare-Ware’ twin beaches lies in between Ratnagiri and Ganpatipule. It is around 12 km away from both sides. These twin beaches were formed due to the corner of the mountain that submerged in the sea. It is a geological wonder in itself. The two sides of the same mountain, the Aare and Ware beach were formed due to the convergence of the mountain into the ocean.

We were mesmerized by its beauty and the serenity of nature, and instantly fell in love with the untouched and crescent looking twin beaches of Aare and Ware.

Ratnadurg Fort:-

‘Ratnadurg fort’ is about 4 km away from Ratnagiri bus stand. It is surrounded by Arabian Sea on three sides and is a structure in a form of horseshoe. A splendid ‘Shree Devi Bhagwati Temple’ is located at the highest point inside the Ratnadurg fort which is an ancient architectural marvel. The temple is very clean, quiet, peaceful & huge in size. Every year during ‘Navratri’, a huge festival is organized in this temple.

‘Ratnadurg fort’ gives us a splendid view of the sunset and Arabian Sea. It has multiple viewpoints to see the amazing scenery of waves splashing across the cliffs. We experienced the positive energy and divine atmosphere at this place.

How to Reach:- To visit this fort Bus service is not available; Auto-rickshaws will charge around Rs.100/- for 3 persons. Or you can visit with your own vehicle.

With the visit of ‘Ratnadurg fort’ we concluded our tour to Ratnagiri.

How to reach Ratnagiri**:-**

  • **By Air:-**Ratnagiri does not have its own airport. The nearest airport is Pune, which is 325 km away and another is at Mumbai, which is 350 km away from Ratnagiri.
  • **By Bus:-**Ratnagiri is well connected by M****SRTC buses and private tourist buses also.
  • By Train:- Ratnagiri is well connected by Konkan Railways.

That’s a splendid and detailed description of some of the gems of the Konkan region @vijayparadkar

Is there any advancement in recreational activities on the beaches?

However, about air connectivity, I wish to add something.

Ratnagiri does have an airstrip but there aren’t any commercial flights. Nevertheless, then the nearest functional airport would be Margao in Goa at 263 KM and that would offer a double bonanza!

Hello @C_T

Thank you so much for your wonderful comment.

There aren’t any advancement in recreational activities on the beaches yet.

I was unaware about ‘Margao’ airport, so I didn’t mention it in my post. But thank you that you pointed it out, as you said it is a double bonanza as ‘Goa’ is a famous tourist place in India.

Aare-ware twin beaches are really a hidden gem!

All these 3 spots have their own unique beauty and importance; so it is very difficult for me to pick a favorite. I like all the 3 spots equally.

Hi @vijayparadkar ,
I am absolutely delighted with the places that you described in your wonderful post. I was surprised by the Lord Ganesha Temple in Ganapatipule, Aare-Ware twin beaches that arose as a result of convergence, the Shree Devi Bhagwati Temple in Ratnadurg fort. Thanks to your post (just like the work of the whole #TeamIndia), I realized that India is a country worth seeing.

Amazing post @vijayparadkar Sir … I always wanted to go to Ganpatiphule :grinning:

I really like the sceneries in and around the temple - esp. the beaches. You have very well articulated the whole article, esp. the modes to reach Ganpatiphule from Ratnagiri.

Can you tell how the Ganesh Chaturthi festival is celebrated here. I think there might be huge crowd on the day of visarjan, like that happen in Mumbai.

Hello @Tushar18

I am glad that you liked my post and thank you very much for your kind words.

I have described in my post about only 3 places in Ratnagiri, but entire Konkan is really beautiful. There are many places like Velneshwar and Hedavi which are really magnificent places.

I never visited here during any Ganesh Chaturthi festival. But visited once on ‘Sankashti Chaturthi’ (it comes in every month); thousands of pilgrims come here every month to gain blessings from ‘Lord Ganesha’.

Plan your visit here; you will fall in love with this place.

Hi @vijayparadkar Sir,

I have read a lot about beauty of Konkan - its sceneries, beaches and mountains. I never visited here, but would definitely like to come here at least once. If I’m not wrong, this region extends all long till Goa?

Both Velneshwar and Hedavi are serene beaches where one can sit and relax. I like Hedavi as more peaceful !!!

Thanks to you for telling the new information about Sankashti Chaturthi - I read that it considered auspicious day to worship Lord Ganesha.

I want to know one more thing about Ratnagiri - I’ve heard that mangoes produced there are world-famous, esp. Alphonso (Hapus). Am I right? Can you please describe? :grinning:

Hello @Tushar18

Thank you for showing interest in Konkan region. You are absolutely right; Konkan region extends all long till Goa. But unfortunately Goa is more famous among the travellers; but there are so many places in Konkan which are really wonderful.

You are right, Alphonso (Hapus) mangoes of Ratnagiri are world famous by its name; but it is on second number. Number one Hapus mango is ‘Devgad’ Hapus; it comes in bigger size and tastes very sweet. The mangoes season starts from March to June.

Hi @vijayparadkar Sir,

I have read a lot about Konkan beauty and your post added much more information now. :grinning:

I’m really fond of mangoes (as everyone is) and heard a lot about Hapus. I would definitely try Devgad Hapus and for that I think I have to visit Konkan in March-June.
