One of the least visited castles in Portugal. (!)Going up to the tower may be complicated, as the space is extremely narrow. In 49 B.C., the local castro was conquered by the Romans. Since that time, it was used as a military position, regularly taken by different forces. In the 12th century, the castle (built by the Moors) was conquered by Afonso Henriques. It was ruined by war, so it was rebuilt, and the new elements were added. In the 16th century, it was ruined by an earthquake, but its military importance was lost, so it was fully reconstructed just in the 20th century.
