Unmanned stations of Kamaishi Line at the edge of Tono, Iwate

I’ll introduce two unmanned stations of Kamaishi Line as a post of #monthlytopic, February, 2020 - Station. They are near the border of Tono and Sumita. Nowadays, very few customers are using them because a highway was accomplished and most of the people moved to bigger cities. Of course, trains are also only a few a day. But they are still necessary stations for the people. I’m anxious about their future but anyway, please look at them as a memorial.

Hirakura Station

This station looks just a small shed. And truly, it’s almost a shed. If there are not a time table and the nameplate, we cannot judge it is a station.

This station is really quiet and you are able to see a nice rural landscape. Check the photos on the map out.

Ashigase Station

Ashigase Station is the next station of Hirakura Station and the last station in Tono side of Kamaishi Line. It is also an unmanned station.

The equipment of this station is better and newer than Hirakura station. There is a slope for a wheelchair and an announcement.

The most crowded day of this station in a year is the day a Steam train, SL Ginga stops here.

[Japanese]

Both the stations look nice @HiroyukiTakisawa . But their loneliness disappoints me. In Hirakua Station I can see a bicycle which indicates that someone comes here. So this is at least less lonely than the Ashigase station I think. Thanks a lot for choosing this nice topic for this month.

@HiroyukiTakisawa I like Ashigase Station, it is cute. Is that Kappa? Do you know the story of it?

Hello, @MukulR

I used Hirakura Station in my youth. That time, there were a lot of people there. The parking space for bicycles was narrow for us. It’s a good memory for me now:-)

That is Kappa! And of course, I know a famous Kappa story in Tono.
Someday I maybe tell the story here:-)

In any case, I was surprised because you know Kappa, haha.

@HiroyukiTakisawa I have seen it in Japanese cartoons. I think I have read about it when I planned to visit Tohoku. Anyhow, I look forward to your story about it. Thank you for sharing this post with us.

Thanks for sharing @HiroyukiTakisawa !

Yes, it is true to see them so empty and desolate these stations make a little sadness.
They seem there to give shelter in case of need (rain or whatever) instead of being stations.

Unfortunately, it is the price of progress that we have to pay.

Bye,
David

Wah, mantap, mantap.

I never know that this kind of station, the unmanned station because of very few customers, does really exist, @HiroyukiTakisawa -san.

I only know this kind of place from anime and manga I’ve watched/read. I think it’s very gloomy-romantic.

But when the station is unmanned, @HiroyukiTakisawa -san, who’s operating it when there’s customer want to ride the train? Are they just buy the ticket from ticket machine?

It’s really interesting places, @HiroyukiTakisawa -san. Thanks for sharing with us. Arigato

@HiroyukiTakisawa It is long time ago. I think I have seen Kappa from Ikkyū-san or Doraemon. Have you watched them? Ikkyu-san is my favorite cartoon.

hi @HiroyukiTakisawa I always love story about Japan. The photos make me imagine about movie scene. Thanks for sharing :slightly_smiling_face:

Hello, @iorikun301

It’s a good question. Customers need to open the door and take a boarding certificate inside the train by themselves. And they pay the charge at the arrival station using the boarding certificate.
Some people are believing all the trains and stations in Japan are the newest and advanced but it is wrong. There are still a lot of ways here and there in Japan. I guess experiencing them is also fun sometimes:-)

Thank you @NunungAfuah :slightly_smiling_face:

Actually, such stations often appear in a movie and an anime. They were usual in my youth but they will be likely to disappear sooner or later. It’s a bit sad for me :pensive:

Unmanned station
