Unlocking the Potential of Urban Navigation: Enhancing Enschede's Cityscape Together

Hello Road Mappers!

What amazing energy here! I’m Anthony from the Netherlands :netherlands: , and although I’m not a member of the Road Mappers program (unfortunately) , I do need your help!

I’ve been busy upgrading my city lately. And let’s be honest, my city (Enschede, Netherlands :netherlands: ) is just a gem! Situated on the border between the Netherlands :netherlands: and Germany :de: , it attracts a daily flow of tourists and shoppers. And as if that’s not enough, we also have a vibrant international university :mortar_board: with a campus full of visitors discovering our city’s hidden treasures via Google Maps :bulb: .

Recently, I made an adjustment to a road in the city center, but I must admit I could use some help in implementing it properly.

*My intention was to clearly highlight the downtown area where pedestrians and cyclists are allowed with walking and biking routes, but now only a small area has been modified. See photo.

Is there a colleague who has some time to help me make the downtown roads top-notch again?

Also, a question… Is it possible to have road navigation in the underground parking garage beneath the city center? We have one of the largest underground parking facilities :blue_car: :biking_man: :motor_scooter: in the Netherlands here. How cool would it be if navigation also worked here? (This underground parking garage accommodates 1700 cars and 1000 bikes.)

Furthermore, in our city, we have bike highways (F35) connecting cities around Enschede and within Enschede to the downtown area. These bike highways are designed to provide faster and safer routes for cyclists from the region. Unfortunately, they are not visible on the map as a bicycle highway , even though these routes are much faster than the standard bike navigation of Google Maps.

I would like to hear from you

Best

regards,

Anthony :facepunch:

Hello @AnthonyNLD

The Road Mapper program is separate from the Google Maps desktop road editing program, and only covers roads in a few specific countries.

If you post a link to coordinates of the specific area where you need help, some of us could attempt to use the satellite imagery to insert the roads that need to be drawn in your area.

Hi Tony,

Thank you for your response and clear explanation. I’ll reach out to Google Maps :+1: .

Regarding adding a road, I do have a location nearby.

It’s a walking area near the airport (Twente Airport). Fun fact: this airport is also home to the only “Automatic” police drone in Europe.

*Nowhere else in Europe is a police drone allowed to fly out of sight of the controller.

I’ve attached a photo. The walking/cycling path is visible on satellite, but the paths haven’t been loaded into Maps yet.

Hi @AnthonyNLD , what a great project. This is something you can totally do for your community by adding the paths right into the Live Map. I’d recommend doing it on PC rather than mobile. After you draw a path, it can take days to weeks for approval. Just be patient.

When I turn on the biking layer, I can see quite a few of the highways have already been noted. I havn’t spotted F35, but N733, N734, N736, & N342 have all been mapped.

As for your walking path you discussed with @tony_b , I’m afraid the proximity to the airport might limit your ability to get it approved. Just a guess.

About 7 years ago, I used Maps to plan out an amazing ride from Amsterdam to Zandvoort … but when the day arrived to ride, it was raining. I ended up having to rent a car, which meant our spoiled beach day was spent exploring other areas. It turned out to be amazing.

Hey, thanks for the heads-up! I appreciate your encouragement and advice. It’s awesome to hear about your experience in the Netherlands  with mapping routes and your adventurous spirit. Rain or shine, it sounds like you always find a way to make the most of it. Keep exploring and mapping those paths – you’re making a difference too.

Hi @AnthonyNLD ,

Welcome to the community!

To make your interactions with other Local Guides easier, it’s best to use the tagging tool. Simply type @ and then the name of the person you’re responding to. That way they will receive a notification and be able to join the conversation with ease.

Since your post isn’t related to the Road Mapper program, I will move it to our general How-tos board. That’s the best place to ask questions about Maps and the Local Guides program. Also, since you’re new here, you may want to introduce yourself to our community. Thank you!
