For about two months, many locations have disappeared from the map.
To take a picture in such a location I drove five hundred kilometers when I got home to the computer and wanted to add the pictures, the location no longer exists. Instead, on the map are old photos taken by other guides.
Can anyone clarify me?
Will the locations be restored?
In the meantime, I have deleted the photos added by me in other locations, transformed in this interval into unknown locations on the map, losing tens of thousands of views.
How are you sharing @To_paul unknown location usually only happens when a work-around is used to share the images instead of adding them via the Maps app or Maps website?
In addition to @PaulPavlinovich question I would like to inform you that I am going to relabel your post to the How-tos section of Connect, because this is the place where you may ask questions and give tips.
In the specific case someone created a duplicate place, and merged the original place on the duplicate. The photos were disconnected from the POI, becoming related to an Unknown Location.
An unknown location can also refer to the photos added on a place during the creation of the POI. If the editing is not approved, your photos will no longer connected to the POI
Monument Memorial Poarta Alba was erected in honor of those sent by the Communist regime to build the Black Sea Danube canal starting in 1949, the political prisoners of that period thousands of them dying there because of the extermination system imposed by the authorities. After December 1989, when Communism collapsed, this monument was erected and a memorial museum is being built next to the memory of the approximately 5,000 people who lost their lives tormented, starved and worked to death for the waterway.
Location … Monument Memorial Poarta Alba … existed this year on google maps until July.
Yeah, it happened to me as well might in a different way.
I wrote a review and put the photo on it. Then when I check the photo, the photos are still there but the review and the location were missing only the word Unknow location.
The solution “provided” isn’t an actual solution. For example, I did add pictures of a school. 50.000 views later, the picture shows an “unknown location”. The school does not have my pictures anymore.
The school is not close. 687Q+CR Hamilton, Ontario
The question is, how can we re-connect those pictures to the POI?
I think we have to wait for some to add the same location and approved by google maps then we moved the pictures and create another review. Unfortunately, by doing so the number of photo viewers reset to zero. I guess…
I have several pictures that were disconnected from their POI and showing up as Unknown places.
Yesterday, on the phone, the “unknown place” was actually an active link and when I did tap on it, it opened a location in Russia (the picture was taken in Canada). Unfortunately, I did not take a screenshot.
Today, the link is no longer active. I was looking for a way to reconnect the picture to the right POI, but I was not able to find any. A tool similar to the map edit “update location on map” should be available for this issue, in order to take the picture back to the correct location.
I have been reading about the reasons why the pictures are disconnected from their POI, but in my case, the place has the same name and was not deleted. Yes, I had situations when someone changed the name of a POI (wrongfully) and the pictures did show “unknown place”. It took several months of editing the name of that place in order for Google to correct it, but the pictures are disconnected.
Google engineers should acknowledge this issue and come up with a tool.
How can you say “the place was not deleted” @Bogdan-AD ?
If you read my original reply, this is exactly what happened to me: someone created another POI, with the same data, and removed the one where I contributed, flagging the place as “not exist”.
That’s exactly the reason why I asked to receive a notification when someone flag as “not exist” a place where I contributed.
Unfortunately there are Local Guides who add places without searching if a place already exist, and then, when they see the mistake, they flag as “not exist” the previous one.
Making the creation of places more difficult will not help, while asking to the previous contributors to confirm the edit may help
Hi, @ErmesT how do I enable notifications for places that I have edited/contributed to that are flagged as “not exist”? I had few experiences with POI’s name being changed that took me months of reporting and updating the names until it got reverted. Please add screenshots. Thanks
Ok, I have read it once again and understood that you were requiring it (and I acquiesce to it).
I think that they were having an option in place when you can check the suggestions made on the map. I don’t see that in my G Maps under “Your contributions” anymore but anyway was far from your idea.
The bottom line is that the maps editing is full of flaws that allow spammers and crooks to take advantage and unexperimented local guides to make mistakes, so something similar to Map Maker review should be implemented.
