The literal meaning of “Umm Ali” is “Mother of Ali RA (fourth Islamic Caliph)”. This is considered as an ancient dessert and it has its roots traced back to the 12th Century.
The dessert has many varieties and is prepared in many ways based on the regions (Mostly, Middle Eastern countries). In our part of Saudi Arabia (Eastern province), the dessert is usually comprising of bread or puff pastry cut into small pieces and is mixed with the chopped dry fruits (almonds, pistachios, raisins) and coconut flakes. A lot of sugar will be added to the blended mixture. Full fat milk along with the cream is pour down over the mixture and a pinch of cinnamon will be sprinkled on it. Finally, the blend is baked in the oven until the surface is golden brown in color.
This restaurant is well-known for Umm Ali dessert in my local community. I usually buy Umm Ali from this restaurant (Take-out). The price of this tasty dessert is 8 SAR (2.15 US$) and will be sufficient for one person. The dessert is heavy in calories and contains ~350 Calories/serving (150 grams). The restaurant is also famous for Arabian Mandi, Kabsa and other Arabic food dishes.
@MukulR The dessert was tasty and mostly sweet with smooth texture of bread blended with cream and dry-fruits. The dessert was super hot and was just removed from the oven, that’s why you can see the foam on the surface.
Saludos Farid

Hello @fasi6083 that is great you spoke about UM Ali . In Jordan , we do it in Our houses , but it’s not very common. Moreover, it’s available in not many restaurants or a dessert shops. @FalguniP the milk must be added with the mixture earlier. lol.
Thanks for the comment @FaridTDF I love all the taste of all food dishes from Arab cuisine. Have you ever tasted the Kunafa, baklava, and Basbousa, even these Arab sweets tastes good.
@FalguniP Thanks for the comment, As earlier said by my brother @OSAMA_1 Milk should be added earlier in the mixture and later the blend should be baked in the oven.
Thanks for your comment @OSAMA_1 Here in Saudi Arabia the dessert is available in all the bakeries and sweet shops. Even in the buffets during the events, I see Umm-Ali being served along with other sweets.
Saludos Farid
