Ulania village of Mehndiganj upazila in Barisal district has an ancient traditional zamindar house. Which is currently known to all as Ulania Zamindar Bari. ‘Ulania Zamindar Bari Jame Masjid’ stands witness to history and tradition at the entrance of zamindar’s house.
The mosque was built in 1861. For more than 150 years, the Mosque has been visited by Muslims.
Muslims currently offer juma prayers regularly at the mosque along with five waqt prayers. And during the month of Ramadan, devout Muslims worship the mosque, including offering Tarabi prayers. But tourists from different parts of the country come to Ulania to see the mosque as it retains tradition even after the renovation.
One of the features of this mosque is that it has a large nakara (drum-like object). Which was played at various important times including during Sahari and Iftar. Through which the villagers were given messages on specific issues.
The mosque has been renovated a few times since its inception in 1861, but the original appearance is still intact. The three-dome mosque is much like the Taj Mahal. There are shanbandha ponds in front of the mosque. Jafri has work on six iron envelopes before the main room.
Inside the mosque is a mihraab on the west side. The outer wall contains inscriptions made of chinese clay pieces. The mosque is built in mughal style. There are geometric creepers and fruit designs on the inside and outside.
The beam’s roof-locked mosque has three doors. The middle of the three doors of the mosque was relatively large and the inscription was engraved under the design of the two walls on either side of it.
The verses of the Qur’an, engraved on the right wall, are damaged, but most of the text survives.
The then zamindar of Ulania built this spectacular mosque. Who was the descendant of pirate suppressor Subedar Sheikh Mohammad Haneef.
After the battle to chase the pirates disappeared into the Fort River, the mosque is now called the Sangram Fort by many.
