Travel guide to Plovdiv - Bulgaria, which was chosen as the European Capital of Culture in 2019

I would like to tell you about this magnificent city located right above the history of Rome. The name of this city is Plovdiv. This city also contains artifacts from the Ottoman Empire. We can also call it as filibe, as it was called in the Ottoman Empire.

Many restorations were carried out along with the conservation work carried out by the Republic of Bulgaria. It was chosen as the European Capital of Culture in 2019, with the contribution of the historical artifacts unearthed as a result of these restorations.

There is an airport very close to the city center and it is also very easy to reach by road.

You can start your trip with the ancient theater located in the middle of Plovdiv city. This unique structure from the Roman period, built in the second century, has been preserved very well until today.

Plovdiv Ancient Theater

Nowadays, artistic activities are also held in this theater from time to time. You can also enjoy the unique view while sipping your coffee in the cafe section right above the theater.

The building, built by the Roman emperor Trajan, is one of the most famous historical monuments in Bulgaria.

The total capacity of the ancient theater is 7000 people.

As I mentioned at the beginning of my article, the city also contains works of Ottoman architecture. One of these works is the Djumaya mosque.

Djumaya Mosque

Plovdiv, as it was called in the Ottoman Empire, is one of the most important regions of the empire in the Balkans. The mosque was built by Sultan first Murat after the conquest of the city. The mosque is still open for worship and active today. You can also experience Turkish coffee, Turkish tea and baklava in the cafe section located right in front of the mosque.

Roman Forum

The Roman Forum was an important trade center during the ancient Roman period. Even when you enter a store on Knez Alexander Street, the most famous street of the city, you can observe the historical works underground through the glass sections inside the store.

Plovdiv Old Town

This region was protected by UNESCO in 2004 and was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. You can spend a day in this region, which hosts old historical churches, many cafes and museums.

If you arrive with your car there is no car parking issue in this region. Many street musicians also perform in this area.

Alyosha Monument

The city offers you the opportunity to experience the unique Plovdiv view and nature. You should definitely visit the Alyosha Monument, which is a place you can easily reach from the city center. The monument is a building depicting the Russian Soviet period of the city. It is located on Bunardzhika Hill, one of the most important hills of the city.
