Dear LG Connect Members,
I would like to share my experience of visiting a historical monument situated in the Old Delhi area. The Town Hall has stood the test of time since it was built in 1863 and still remains an important landmark in the Old City.
Brief History : The townhall was constructed between 1860-1863 to accomodate a university called Lawrence Institute which had a Darbar Hall, Library and reading rooms which was built for Europeans. Later, it served as the headquarters of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi until 2009 when their office was shifted to a new location.
Interesting Facts : Based on literary records, the Town Hall was constructed on the site of a Caravan Serai (Resting place for travelers) which was built in the 16th Century. It also had a 230 foot Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar) which collapsed in the 1950s.
The townhall houses a statue of Arya Samaj Leader Swami Shraddhanand who was a revolutionary and played a key role in subduing city wide riots which broken out in 1919.
Currently it’s not in regular use, though a few conservation and restoration work has been done in the past few years. We can still feel the old world charm while entering the Town Hall where portraits of freedom fighters and previous Prime ministers adorn the walls as a testament to their sacrifices and resolve.
Accessibility
The building has wheelchair Accessible entrance
Public Restrooms are available outside the building, there is no washroom facility in the premises
No tickets are required to enter the Town Hall
I always feel a sense of tingling excitement and happiness when exploring historical places. I hope you all enjoyed this bit of history as much as I did.
