Tour of Libraries with the help of Local Guides

Prior to traveling I scope out libraries near my destination to visit. For me, libraries are a way to see how a culture sees itself. Libraries tell us what the culture sees an important. Library buildings, inside and out, can also be architecturally striking.

Last year I visited Germany for the first time. I loved seeing the traditional sights, eating new foods, and experiencing this new-to-me country. In addition to the standard tourist sights, I researched local libraries ahead of time including their hours, entrance policies, and any available tours.

I was thrilled to visit the Jacob und Wilhelm Grimm Zentrum at Humboldt University in Berlin. Shortly after opening it was packed with diligent students.

Later in my trip I had a delightful tour of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (Bavarian State Library) where I had the pleasure of a guided tour. This tour was the highlight of my trip. I learned much about both the library and Bavaria in the hour tour.

Google maps is a big part of my research process in identifying what libraries I want to visit. I look at information about each of the libraries and photos of the buildings and collections. Content contributed by Local Guides helps me discover new places to visit in person. In return, I contribute photos and information about my visit to Local Guides to pay it forward for future visitors.
