This post is about Local Guide photo contributions on Google Maps and sharing and learning about the views that these photos achieve. It’s an update on the Top 100 Photo Views leaderboards post of January, 2021 and contains a set of leaderboards that show the photo views data of some 200 Local Guides.
All Local Guides can participate:
And no you don’t have to be a “top gun” Level10 with a mega million views! The leaderboards have been specifically designed so that Local Guides at any level can participate, and you’ll see many do. So, whether you’re an entry level Local Guide or from a small town or village, or a top level Local Guide from London, New York, Paris or New Delhi, you can join in and it’s simple to do! To find out more and how to participate just hit this link.
Is this just a competition?
While there is an inherent competitive element within them, the aim of these leaderboards is to motivate us, help us to monitor our contributions and performance, and show us how to improve and make better contributions so that we achieve better results, all in a fun and enjoyable way! If this can be done then these leaderboards will have achieved their objective, their mission will be accomplished!
Conclusion
These leaderboard posts are more than just seeing who has the best photos or the most photo views, far from it! Being able to look at our photo performance in different ways as well as in relative terms to that of other Local Guides and our peers in a fun and friendly way, these posts show us how we can improve our personal contributions, improve the quality of being a Local Guide, and thus lead to better quality information on Google Maps; it really is a win-win-win. ps: Yes, like in the January post, I’m still hot on hot air ballooning and if you haven’t as yet seen @kessc’s amazing photos from the air in his great “Kapadokya’da Gün Doğumunda balonla uçmak” post, then I recommend you do and if you ever get the chance then you must visit Cappadocia, an amazing place in Turkey.

2 - The exclusive Billion Photo Views Club (April, 2022)
I say that anyone with a BILLION views needs to be specially highlighted on these leaderboards and this is what the Billion Photo Views Club is all about. The leaderboard shown below lists the Local Guides participating here with a BILLION+ photo views on Google Maps as at 8 April, 2022.
It’s just amazing to think that anyone can get a BILLION views on their photo contributions but there you have it, you can and just think, you don’t have to be a Level 10 Local Guide to be in this club!!! Local Guides in this group have certainly helped a lot of people using Maps and give us all some idea of the amazing potential we all have when we make photo contributions.
How did the amazing Local Guides achieve this? Well I’ve worked it out and in my opinion it’s really simple!! Learn and think about the photos you take and just keep taking them, one click at a time. And that’s exactly how you and I are going to join this club. We know where we want to get to and we now know how to do it. Wishing you all well. When reading this leaderboard the leaderboard documentation may help. A BIG congratulations to @JordanSB who is the latest entrant to this very exclusive club and as you can see from the overall leaderboard, there are a few others already knocking on the door!
9 - Top 100 Average Views per Photo Leaderboard - All participating Local Guides (April, 2022)
In this leaderboard, the photo views achievement of participating Local Guides is shown in the order of average views per photo. The essential idea here is that the average views per photo gives a good overall single measure of the quality of a Local Guide’s photo contribution on Google Maps; the higher the average views per photo, the higher the overall quality of a Local Guide’s Google Maps photos. Of course this is an average figure and there can be problems with averages but still I think it’s a nice simple way of looking at the overall quality of our photo contribution on Google Maps. What’s really interesting from this leaderboard is that some Local Guides show much better average views per photo than Local Guides at higher Local Guide levels! For example, I’m a Level 10 Local Guide yet there are many Local Guides at lower LG levels that are out performing me!
If we accept that the average views per photo gives a good overall measure of a Local Guide’s photo contributions on Google Maps then one way to improve your overall photo performance is to have less but better quality photos: the more views you have for a smaller number of photos will result in a higher average views per photo and a good way to achieve this is to have less but better quality photos for each review.
I have deleted entry #3 in Leaderboard #8, Level 4 & 5 Local Guides because as well as not entering correct details, this level 5 Local Guide has chosen not to make his/her Google maps profile public. One of the Terms & conditions of participation states that:
Once posted on the Leaderboards, your Information will be visible to all Connect Local Guides and for full transparency, you agree to ensure that your Maps profile is at all times not publicly restricted. On desktop, visit Your contributions > Profile settings and make sure that your profile is not restricted. For Android and iPhone & iPad see the Manage your Maps profile, Google Maps Help topic.
Hi @AdamGT seems the dummy me missed a number at the time of submission, I already fixed it for next month
AT the time I should have entered 450 million plus… for photo views not 42 million plus. This definitely taught me to be more meticulous on my entries, I’ll get it right next month.
Thanks for your comment @TravellerG and sorry for the delay in replying. For obvious reasons it’s preferable that everyone uses the same procedure. Having said that, unfortunately the procedures are different depending on whether you using a desktop PC or mobile. Based on your query, I have now added instructions at the point of data entry for both desktop and mobile. Let me know if this clears up your confusion.
Hi @TerryPG , I’m sorry to hear about your error. In a future update I will detect such errors and issue a warning message. I’ve just added this to the feedback as Item #116
Firstly, it doesn’t matter that you picture doesn’t have a million views.
Secondly, regardless of whether or not you have set your Google Maps profile to restricted or public, the information you add on Maps, including photos, are always public and visible across Google services so why hide your profile? I’m of the view, that hiding your profile implies that you have something to hide!
Finally, by participating you can learn a lot about photos for Maps.
