Top 100 Google Maps Local Guides Movers & Shakers (2024)

Hello @Manishhh
Possible reasons why a Local Guide might not be included on the 2024 movers & shakers leaderboards are explained in detail in the readme section and from what I can see you haven’t read this. I suggest you do.

Dear @AdamGT, thank you for explaining what the Top 100 Champion and Top 10 Champion leaderboards mean. Now I understand that these are the most important tables that are an indicator of success. I also found it interesting that the one with the highest frequency does not necessarily have the highest score. Interesting statistics.

Dear @PrasadVR, don’t be disappointed. Everything is still ahead.

Yes that can happen @katydarhel. It’s a bit like decathlon where athletes are assigned points for each event based on their performance in the individual events. The total score is the sum of points from all 10 events. In our case, points are assigned to each Local Guide based on the performance in each metric (leaderboards 1 to 19 in the case of scoring for the Top 100 board or leaderboards 1 to 20 in the case of scoring for the Top 10 board ) and the final score is the sum of all individual leaderboard scores. Given this, it can certainly happen that the one with the highest frequency (appearing on more leaderboards) does not necessarily have the highest score.

Thank you @AdamGT for explaining the scoring system in the leaderboards 1-19, Top 100, and Top 10. Still, I lack some transparency in scoring points. I can’t figure out on my own exactly how many scores gets a local guide by taking 1st place on the leaderboard. And whether gets any scores the local guide who took the 100th place in the leaderboard? The first thing that comes to mind is that the local guide who takes the first place gets 100 scores and the guide who takes the 100th place gets only 1 score. This is just a guess.

P.S. Your new avatar looks amazing!!!

I did say that it’s a bit like decathlon however while conceptually similar to a decathlon-style ranking, and unlike decathlon, we have a varying set of participants across different “events” (the different leaderboards/Maps metrics). In essence, we need a way to compute a composite score that fairly represents a Local Guide’s achievements in the year across multiple metrics while accounting for the varying number of metrics they qualify in and this is where the comparison to decathlon breaks down as in the decathlon all athletes compete in all events.

So how then do we calculate a fair score?
Weighted Rank Sum: Yes one way is as you have indicated, to assign inverse rank points in each metric and sum them up:

  • The top-ranked Local Guide on a leaderboard gets 100 points (since there are 100 in the ranking).
  • The second-ranked gets 99 points, third gets 98, … last gets 1 point.
  • The overall score for a Local Guide is the sum of their points across all leaderboards (metrics) they appear on.

It’s a simple and intuitive approach but it rewards higher rankings more heavily and does not allow for the overall strength of the achievements of Local Guides on the different leaderboards. There are statistical ways to address this. For example, we could compute the

Weighted Average Rank (Relative Performance): and instead of simply summing up raw inverse rank points, we normalize it by the number of leaderboards qualified for and by doing so, Local Guides that have qualified on many leaderboards are not unfairly advantaged over those excelling in fewer metrics. While undervaluing the advantage of excelling in more metrics, what I like here is that we ensure fair comparison across specialists and generalists. A more complex decathlon-style,

Scientific ranking approach would be a Z-score normalization approach where the mean and standard deviation of ranks is computed in each event (leaderboard in our case) and the athlete’s event score (Local Guide’s leaderboard score) would be the Local Guide’s rank minus the mean rank divided by the standard deviation. This approach accounts for the variation in ranking difficulty across different metrics and makes rankings comparable across different distributions but of course it is computationally more complex.

Dear @AdamGT, thank you so much for such a detailed explanation of the scoring system. I tried to figure out this system, although it’s not easy at all. As I understand it, you equalize the Local Guide’s achievements in such a way that you evaluate them by the number of hits in the leaderboard rather than by the high places occupied.

As I understand it, the formula for awarding scores to a Local Guide in each of the leaderboard looks like this:

LG’s event score = LG’s rank - mean rank/standard deviation

where LG’s rank is a number from 1 to 100 (in descending order),
but the values of mean rank and standard deviation are not clear. And I don’t even know if I should ask what they mean. If it’s something complicated, then I might not understand :exploding_head:.

I think we’ve probably already confused many here on Connect @katydarhel. It is a little complicated but next time I will try to explain it better, perhaps by sharing the spreadsheet used. I already shared one of the spreadsheets with some users.

I continue to be so impressed with the amount of detail and hard work that you put into this @AdamGt. The humorous gif of the bartender shaking made me giggle- bringing me some light in this busy month. I like the idea of this movers/shakers board and how you highlighted the top ones for the year. I was reading through your discussion on the calculations approach- all I can say is wow- you truly have put so much thought into making this both fun and fair. So much behind the scenes work. I was so happy to see some familiar names in this board, including mines yay- a small win for me. But most importantly, I love how this board shows how even the small players can get their names up by being the one with the most incremental effort in the year.

Yes, that’s something I’m hoping to remedy as well. My last update was in 2023 but I submitted my Maps data today so at least that’s one step closer.

The Star Photos leaderboard is a bit confusing. The post for the 2025 album looks to be locked so not sure what to do next.

Fingers crossed, I can be more active with the Leaderboard this year! But it was fun designing the new badge and I’m thankful for the opportunity

I fully understand Adrian. It’s a problem I’ve been having with many other things and have had little or even no time to participate on other things in this Community.

Regarding your updates, much of this has been done for you and you can verify this by checking the historical monthly Leaderboard posts.

I’m not at all sure what issues you had however, I suggest that you start with this Leaderboard index that will at least make sure that you land at the right place. I just checked it and the star photo album wasn’t “locked” for me. Try again and let me know the details of any issues you have.

It certainly was fun designing the new badge and what a great outcome with input from you, the Local Guides Team, myself and on my part with assistance of @katydarhel to end up with a cracker of a unique and very exclusive Connect badge.

On this page, the link as shown in the screenshot below goes to a page that is archived/locked.

I have now seen the other link which points to the correct 2025 album so I’m all good. Thanks!

It’s wonderful to see the great work you’re doing @AdamGT with the Leaderboards. It’s very rare I get the opportunity to make it onto the Movers & Shakers Leaderboard but with a fantastic month of travel and over 8000 points contributions I should have been on this January’s Leaderboard. Is it possible to correct this Adam @AdamGT

@MilesMac No doubt @AdamGT will respond at some time in his busy schedule. I just wanted to point out this is the overall 2024 Movers & Shakers Leaderboard, not the January 2025 one.

Congrats on your amazing performance in January, and quite possibly you’re listed in the right place if you met all the criteria.

Thanks tony @tony_b
I realised I was replying to the overall 2024 Movers & Shakers, but I was just trying to find a route through to the January 2025 Movers & Shakers where I’d hoped to appear. Sorry for any confusion. It’s rare for me to be able to contribute enough to be part of such a Leaderboard @AdamGT

You’re not moving and shaking on Points, but you’re listed at #75 for Media Views, #43 for Photo Views, and #8 for Video Views in January 2025.

So sorry for my late reply @AZ_2021. I just get so many messages and I often run out of time in replying to them all. Fortunately like on this occasion, I sometimes come back to a post and see the messages that I have missed.

Thank you so much for your kind words of appreciation and it’s great that you too like the idea of this movers/shakers board and how the top Local Guides for the year are highlighted. I’m also pleased how you picked up and noted the work that goes on behind the scenes to make the whole process both fun and fair allowing even the “small players” to be featured.

Thanks for your kind words of appreciation @MilesMac and it’s great to see that you like the movers & shakers leaderboards. As @tony_b pointed out, this post is about the yearly movers & shakers and from your comment it would seem that you are talking about the monthly, and in particular, the January movers & shakers. Notwithstanding, to appear on either, you must meet the requirements as detailed in the respective readme section.
