Good to see you active again here Steven. or should I call you “Mr. Mall Guy”
@TerryPG ,
I can’t contribute the way I did awhile back, but try to make time to see what’s changing with my fellow contributors…those who kept me on my toes during my 6 month photo campaign in '23. Always looking forward to finding time to saying “Hello” from time to time.
New short topic: About a month ago I visited one of my top photo locations for the very first time (actually had dinner at this restaurant instead of just a storefront photo). While waiting on dinner, I noticed that the ICON shown on the map was a tiny thumbnail of MY PHOTO as well as main business photo in listing. LINK Anyone know if we get credit for that photo these days? I’m thinking NOT…but it would be a nice discussion, and curious how we’d be able to do the math to see if it counts today.
@Rednewt74 @tony_b @WilfriedB @MortenCopenhagen Any thoughts guys?? - Steve
Good question @shunsader! Whenever users display or download a photo from Maps, I see a warning “Photos might be copyrighted” (or similar). So I think, they should mention your name and/or Google Maps at least, but I don’t know, if that would apply to the United States.
Tagging also @ErmesT for his more in depth knowledge (unfortunately haven’t seen from @MortenCopenhagen since quite a while )
Thanks for tagging me, @WilfriedB
Of course
Of course you are getting credit for the photo @shunsader . Once displayed in full size the photo is showing your name as “the author”.
This is an essential principle for Google Maps. In fact, this is also the reason why Google provides APIs for those who want to insert Google Maps content into external sites: because the name of the author of the photo, or the review, must always be visible.
These LBs are really impressive indeed. Hats off as always @AdamGT. You deserve it.
It’s even crazier I’m appearing in so many of them that’s a motivation!
Thank you @efcxp and I’m happy that you like the 2024 Movers & Shakers leaderboards. If you’re appearing in many of them then that’s what’s impressive so hats off to you.
Because of the very nature and complexities in producing the 2024 Top 100/10 Movers & Shakers, there have been quite a few last minutes changes that had to be made so please see this comment and make sure that you re-read the leaderboards.
Wow, this is a very cool badge!!! Thank you @AdamGT for tagging me in your post!!!
Thank you so much @ShailendraOjha for your congratulations. Now that the badge has appeared, it becomes possible to comment on something. It is a great honor for me to participate in the design of some elements for our community!!!
What exactly do you mean by “credit” for the photo, Steve? One thing is certain, you’ll continue to get a lot views if the photo is now the cover photo for that place. It is always nice to go back to a place and see that my own photo is featuring prominently on the map listing.
As to doing “the math to see if it counts”, i keep a monthly spreadsheet record of the numbers on my highest viewed photos, so I can quite easily see if the level of viewership has decreased or increased over time.
I hope to be on the list. I am happy to be part of your success and professional advancement and help you achieve your goals.
@tony_b, The attached is a screenshot from my phone when I’m looking at Maps in Satellite view. The icon for Rocks and Brews (surrounded in yellow), is a thumnail of my photo. EVEN if it looks like the photo I’ve taken, it’s been reduced and therefore Google wouldn’t be able to use the same counter that’s used for the original sized one. As long as people viewing maps are using Satellite View, they’ll see the thumbnail generated by Google, perhaps viewed MUCH MORE since this image will also appear when looking at other businesses in the area. @Rednewt74
Very well @Karimelomdah2. There’s so much you can do to get your name on the monthly Leaderboards this year, and then on the final 2025 Movers and Shakers Leaderboard next January. All the best to you.
Thanks, Steve. When I view the same location I only get the red location pin, not a pin with the place icon. That’s from both mobile and laptop. But on the laptop I can see your photo at the top and left as the cover photo, and if I click to scroll through all photos, yours is the first. I think you’d be getting those views when people actually click on the POI, not when they see the branded pin (as all aren’t seeing it branded).

Tony and Steve,
I remember vage that business owners can choose their own icon to be shown on the map and very likely have to pay for it. Possibly the fee is depending on in which countries these icons are shown.
I had a look at the same area and saw two other restaurants clos to Rock & Brews showing a custom icon:
Вялікі дзякуй за віншаванне!
Перамагчы ў такім глабальным спаборніцтве стала для мяне вялікай нечаканасцю, таму для мяне гэта сапраўднае свята!
А значок атрымаўся крэатыўны і вельмі прыгожага колеру, а значыць ваш унёсак у камандную працу вельмі нават істотны!
Thank you and well done @Tatsiana_T. There were only 87 recipients of this unique and special badge, and you were one of them!!!
I appreciate your modesty @katydarhel but you did more than just the choice of colors because we went through many iterations in both design and colors before we locked it in. Thank you for being there for me as you always are.
