Tomorrow marks the first day of Pchum Ben (បុណ្យភ្ជុំបិណ្ឌ), one of the most meaningful and sacred festivals in Cambodia.
From Ben 1 until Ben 14, families visit pagodas in rotation, offering food to monks. On the 15th day, we gather nationwide for the main day — Pchum Ben Day.
The Story of Pchum Ben
Khmer belief tells us that during these 15 days, the gates of the afterlife open, and spirits of the departed are released. Many are wandering souls waiting for offerings from their living relatives.
By bringing food, candles, and other offerings to pagodas, families transfer merit to their ancestors. Monks recite prayers to bless and guide the spirits.
Why it Matters
Pchum Ben is about remembrance, gratitude, and respect. It connects us with our ancestors, strengthens family bonds, and preserves Khmer tradition.
On Ben 1, people start this journey of merit-making, gathering at the pagoda at sunrise to share offerings and prayers for their loved ones who have passed away.
