Timeless Tales from Agra - 1st Protestant Church of Agra

Dear LG Community,

I’m excited to start a series on a topic I’m passionate about : Heritage of India. This series is based on my recent heritage tour of Agra under the guidance of popular historian Sohail Hashmi.

The 11th and final part of this series is all about the 1st Protestant Church of Agra, St. George’s Cathedral.

History :

St. George’s Cathedral was the 1st Protestant Church of Agra. It’s architect was Thomas Boleau and was constructed in 1828. When he built the church, Thomas Boleau asked for voluntary retirement. However, the East India Company accused him of overspending and he was penalized Rs. 3 lakhs. He was then reassigned to Shimla where he built the Shimla Observatory.

This Church was mainly built for the British Army soldiers as a place to pray, during their stay in the Agra Cantt area. At that time, the whole area around the Church used to be resident quarters for the soldiers.

The Prayer Desk in the church still has holes in them, these holes were used to keep the soldier’s rifles when they were praying

We can visit this church from 9 AM till 6 PM. I found this holy place to be very peaceful and tranquil.

A beautiful memorial erected inside the Church

How to reach Agra :

  • By Road : Agra is well-connected by road, notably via the Yamuna Expressway from Delhi, which offers a smooth and quick journey. You can travel by private car, taxi, or numerous bus services from surrounding cities.
  • By Air: Agra has its own airport, Kheria Airport (AGR), which is primarily a military base but offers limited commercial flights, mainly connecting to Delhi. Many travelers opt to fly to Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) and then travel to Agra by road.

Recommended Stay Option :

  • Hotel Maple Ridge
I stayed at this hotel, it is pocket friendly and easily accessible by Metro, centrally located.

This post concludes the Heritage Agra series. I hope you all enjoyed going through them.

I have come many times from the border of Agra, but I have not been able to visit Agra. Now let’s see which day I get time because I go in my own Moterbike. And I try to reach home by night.
Anyway, dear sid @Ssiddharth2000 if you remember, I have personally praised your Agra blog series in the beginning itself that I liked this series and the special thing about it was its presentation.
