Ratnagiri is a significant tourist destination, famous for its splendid beaches and monuments. The Thibaw Palace stands out as a major attraction. Now functioning as a museum, this three-story structure built of red bricks showcases a unique blend of Burmese and British architectural styles, making it a truly beautiful and distinct building.

The palace was originally constructed by the British to serve as a prison for Burma’s King Thibaw and his family. Following his defeat in the Third Anglo-Burmese War in 1885, which led to the collapse of the Konbaung dynasty, the king and his family were exiled. After a brief stay in Madras, they were confined to the first floor of this newly built palace in 1910.

Within the museum, visitors can see the household items used by King Thibaw’s family. While photography is prohibited, one can explore the palace’s beautiful corridors, halls, and secret staircases. The architecture features arched windows, a large courtyard with a fountain, and a sloping roof of red tiles, with a unique bell-like pattern on the arches, resembling a stupa.
