There is a high chance that editing reviews at the same location will cause them to be hidden

Summary: The review share link for the shop visited for the second time that was affected this time.

Description: Some restaurants or shops may be visited more than once, but often after editing the review, the post becomes unviewable. This issue has bothered me for quite a long time. Since my first and second visits to the same place can result in different experiences, once I edit the review, I can no longer share it with friends. When they open the shared link, it shows as an unsupported link.

I reported this to Google Maps, and they only replied that my account is not restricted. However, in reality, the individual review has been hidden by the system. Even after about a week, the updated content (including comments about the second visit and added photos) is still not visible.

It is recommended to avoid editing the same review. Some experienced Local Guides have suggested that deleting the review and reposting it directly might solve the problem.

@MortenCopenhagen and @ErmesT what is you opinion on this? Personally, I never had problems after editing a review.

Can you quote, where you found this suggestion, @leolin1994?

I got the solution for deleting and reposting comments from the friend who invited me to be a guide, rather than from any official source. Based on their experience, deleting the entire reply and reposting it will make the comment display normally, just like a first-time comment. However, I would still like to keep the edit history, so I decided to bring this issue up here to see if anyone else has encountered it.

When I view the comment with my own account, it appears normal, but the error only shows up after I share it with a friend. If I’m lucky, it starts displaying properly again after two or three days; in other cases, it can remain unavailable for a week, showing an “unsupported link” message and still cannot be viewed.

Note 1: Comments containing videos or added photos are more likely to be hidden after being edited.
Note 2: It is still unclear whether specific emojis or symbols cause this issue and requires further verification, but many posts using :face_savoring_food: :backhand_index_pointing_right: or > 、 : are not affected.

Hi @leolin1994 @WilfriedB

Regarding updates to reviews

If Google would like us not to edit reviews this option would not be available. Further, we often get prompts in Google Maps to update one of our reviews. And we earn points for updating reviews. All these facts contradict the notion that reviews should not be updated.

It is correct, that some users can experience that reviews go private after editing them. This is triggered by two factors: the trust score (that can change over time) and the spam filter which is frequently adjusted.

So I would recommend fellow LGs to edit their reviews when needed. Typically after a revisit.

This is correct, but not necessarily related to the edit, @leolin1994. The spam filter not only checks your text for obeying the rules and suspected spam, but also each attached photo and video. If only one of those is rejected, the entire review stays hidden. If you edit a review, text and attached media is verified again by the filter. Even the part, which was accepted earlier.

Specially videos can stay longer in pending state. Although “a week” sound quite long, it depends also on the number of videos attached.

Regarding

Some experienced Local Guides have suggested that deleting the review and reposting it directly might solve the problem.

I would like to mention that repeated attempts to post the same text is a sure way to trigger the spam filter. So I would not recommend this strategy.

This issue appeared after I revisited the business and edited my review. It might be necessary for the automated review system to clearly indicate what part violates the rules (for example, text, photos, or videos).

As shown in the image I attached, I contacted the Google Maps support team, and they said everything was normal and that there was no violation. Therefore, this seems to be a bug that occurs after editing.

Based on the experience of a friend of mine who works as a guide, deleting and reposting the review would resolve the issue. However, I believe that reviews written after repeat visits are also genuine and truthful, so I was unwilling to delete mine and repost it. Therefore, I did not follow my friend’s suggestion.

At the moment, I have not taken any further action after editing the review following my visit, but when I share the link with friends, it still shows as unavailable. In the past, it usually returned to normal after waiting about 3 to 7 days. This time, however, the waiting period has been longer (over a week), which is why I decided to raise this question.

Making recommendations based on a single or very few observations is not recommended. Sharing experiences and cases is always valuable. Thank you.

In fact, more than one review has this issue. I am using this particular review only as an example to raise the problem. Since I’m not sure what filtering criteria are applied when a review is edited, I decided to share this case. I only discovered the issue by accident when sharing links with friends to places I especially recommend. When I view the reviews myself, everything looks normal and they are not hidden at all.

Note: This issue can also be triggered by editing the post to fix typos or by adding new photos. It can only be noticed when a third party opens the shared link to view the review.

Here are a few more examples (about three). Once the text is edited or additional photos are added, the reviews can no longer be shared properly.
