The world's oldest flower

Do you know what is the world’s oldest flowers? According to the biologists from Harvard University, First Orchid Fossil have been identified as first appearing on earth at some 80 Million Years Old. It is said this origin of this flower co-existed with dinosaurs.

In the 1800s, plants collectors paid thousands of dollars for a single orchid plant. Well, Orchid is the oldest type of flowers in the world, and there are around 25,000 varieties in the entire world.

  • There are about 800 varieties native to Cambodia and growing around the country: from coastal area, mountain area, plateau area, central lowland). 180 varieties of orchid found only in 05 provinces. It comes in different colors and shapes, birds and animal alike shape and many others. I am fascinated by bird-alike shape orchids. They are pure color of blue, purple, red, pink, white, yellow, orange and green or sometimes mixed naturally from those colors!
  • Kesoarkol or Orchid displayed in the bas relief of Banteay Srei and Angkor Wat temple that were built over 900 years ago.
  • From northern Thailand, there are more than 1,000 different species of orchid.
  • People loves to plant them at home because it is easy to take care and flowers stay for a long time - many months. It doesn’t need much water, bigger pots, or much space.
  • Orchids’ blooming season is from late Fall until Spring. Orchids are mostly garden flowers, we don’t use much for decorations or in the functions.
  • When going trekking or hiking, you are likely to see wild orchids along the way!
  • In Cambodia, if you want to learn about Orchid, please stop by Orchid Garden (Google Map with the link here). It is a showroom, for education and conservation. It is very closed to the gate to Phnom Kulen, Siem Reap. Photo gallery of some Cambodian orchids can be found here.

Thank you dear @MAHBUB_HYDER well we have about 800 species native to Cambodia (according to the plant experts). They mainly grow in the wild in natural course.

I have to admit we are not advanced in terms of nursing and breeding them. At some points and even today, Thailand also buy from our wild collection, collected from the wild by locals. I think they are able to produce and breed for new varieties based on those native ones. We are not advanced like them. They are able to make them into mass productions, into commercial and even sell back to us.

These photos were taken from Orchid Garden but what I mean is that these flowers are natural ones. They were taken from the wild, replant and take care by staff over there. But the nursery is rather small and only have about 180 species collections. I even saw many wild orchids when I went camping. They are growing in the wild around Cambodia @MAHBUB_HYDER

Orchids are incredibly beautiful flowers that take so many forms and colors.

Can we plant these flowers in our house garden, @Sophia_Cambodia ?

It actually does not need soil or much space in the garden @TusharSuradkar my auntie only hung them at the wall, and spray water sometimes.

You know, you only put soil wood debris/mixture or small amount of soil wrapped in coconut and keep spraying water to them. It lives very long. I used to have two pieces of coconut wrapped.

@Sophia_Cambodia priče o cvijeću uvijek su lijepe i zanimljive.

Orhideja je prekrasan cvijet.

Nisam znala da je orhideja najstariji cvijet na svijetu.

Vaše fotografije su prelijepe Sophia.

 :croatia:

Boje orhideja su očaravajuće.
