🤖 The Unicorn Gundam: A Colossal Tokyo Landmark

Unicorn Gundam statue is a full-scale, 1:1 replica of the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam from the popular Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn series. It stands at an impressive 19.7 meters (about 64.6 feet) tall, dominating the Festival Plaza outside the DiverCity Tokyo Plaza shopping mall in the Aomi, Odaiba district, koto city, Tokyo.

The Unicorn Gundam was unveiled in September 2017 , replacing the original and much-loved life-sized statue of the RX-78-2 Gundam (the franchise’s original mobile suit), which had occupied the spot since 2012. The Unicorn is notably taller than its predecessor. P-72

The Gundam Base Tokyo Located inside the DiverCity Tokyo Plaza, fans can find THE GUNDAM BASE TOKYO on the 7th floor (a comprehensive Gunpla shop and facility) and the THE GUNDAM BASE TOKYO ANNEX on the 2nd floor near the statue for merchandise and souvenirs.

What makes the Unicorn Gundam particularly famous is its ability to transform between two distinct modes, a mechanical feat that draws crowds of fans and tourists:

★The shimmering stairs

Unicorn Mode The default mode, where the mobile suit appears mostly white, with a single, straight horn (or antenna) on its head.

Destroy Mode is the statue’s panels shift and open up to reveal an internal, glowing psycho-frame . The single horn splits into a V-fin (like a samurai helmet), and the entire suit is accentuated with brilliant red or green lights (depending on the performance). This transformation faithfully recreates the iconic sequence from the anime.

★Fuji Television Building

Daily Performances and Light Shows

The statue is a dynamic exhibit, featuring scheduled performances throughout the day and evening:

Daytime Transformation

The one-minute transformation from Unicorn Mode to Destroy Mode (and sometimes back) occurs several times a day.

Nighttime “WALL-G” Shows

After sunset, the statue lights up dramatically, often in its Destroy Mode . This is coupled with a WALL-G performance, which features:

Video Projections Anime clips and original content are projected onto the wall of the DiverCity Tokyo Plaza building behind the statue.
Music and Lighting Immersive lighting effects, mist, and theme songs from the Gundam series create a captivating, almost theatrical experience.

The Life-Sized Unicorn Gundam is more than just a statue; it’s a piece of kinetic art and a cultural monument that celebrates one of Japan’s most successful and influential media franchises.
