The unexpected chill of Donner Pass

Donner Pass road winds through the Sierra Nevada mountains and immortalizes the macabre history of the Donner Party (look it up if you don’t know - it’s an unbelievable story of the old west). Driving the road myself and my party were overcome with a chill, the landscape is breathtaking, especially with a few feet of snow… but you can’t help but think of the poor souls who lost their lives their many years ago. The area is now a posh ski resort area which seems ironic since it’s the site of one of California’s most salacious stories. At the crest of the mountain there is an overlook which allows you to see the entire valley and Donner Lake, you would never guess its grim history as the beauty is almost blinding. Down in the valley is the Donner Memorial State Park that offers walking trails through the stunning landscape while the onsite museum teaches you pioneering history as well as in depth information on the fateful party for whom it’s all dedicated. A brave hike through the snow led me to the Donner Party Tablet situated on the rock that served as the back wall to one of the parties cabins. The rock is the last remaining landmark and the inscription on it serves as a grim reminder that so many of the travelers never made it to their destination, to see it was both amazing and a bit creepy.
