March
was a historic day in Siem Reap! From the ancient architectural precision of the Khmer Empire to the natural beauty of the Great Lake, here is my full report and guide for fellow travelers.
Phase 1: The Record-Breaking Sunrise (Angkor Wat)
Witnessing the solar alignment at Angkor Wat is a bucket-list experience that only happens twice a year. According to official data, 24,145 people gathered this morning—including 21,535 domestic and 2,610 international guests—to see the sun rise perfectly over the central tower.
-
The Best Spot: I captured my shots from the middle of the main causeway (the route straight to the temple) for that perfect, symmetrical alignment. -
Photo Tip: I shot handheld to stay mobile in the massive crowd, but I highly recommend a tripod for the sharpest results in the low light before dawn.
Phase 2: The Hidden Gem (Bakong Temple)
Later in the day, I visited Bakong Temple. This is a very special location because you can witness the sun setting directly over the central peak of the temple. It offers a stunning, symmetrical view that many visitors overlook. It is a peaceful and spiritual alternative to the more crowded sites.
Phase 3: Golden Hour at Tonle Sap Lake
I finished the journey at Tonle Sap Lake. While the temples show our history, the lake shows the heart of Cambodian life. Watching the sun dip below the horizon over the water and the floating communities was the perfect, serene end to an intense day of photography.
