The Thomas Circle Monument in Washington DC: Rock of Chickamauga

The Civil War in the US was fought between 1861 and 1865 between northern states called the Union and southern states also called the Confederates. George Henry Thomas was an army general on the side of the northern states or the Union. At one instance during the American Civil War George Thomas saved the Union Army from being completely routed and thus earned the nickname “Rock of Chickamauga”.

An equestrian sculpture showing him riding a horse is seen in the center of a traffic circle also named after him and located at the intersection of 14th Street, M Street, Massachusetts Avenue, and Vermont Avenue, N.W. and the monument is called the Thomas Circle Monument. This is the same circle where The National City Christian Church is located.

Back in November 1879, the memorial was dedicated in a grand ceremony featuring a two-mile 2-mile military procession including 1,000 army troops, 1,000 marines and sailors and an estimated 50,000 people had gathered to witness the show. This should explain the prominence of the monument in Washington DC.

Quick Facts

• Designer: John Quincy Adams
• Material: Bronze
• Base: Granite
• Height: 16 feet or 4.9 meter

Have you had an opportunity to walk past a traffic circle that had a statue of a great warrior? I’d be interested in knowing your experiences.

Until then… Happy Guiding ?

Nice to share this place @SilvyC the statue is an amazing pose and also unique with a spear with a flag and a shield.

Probably the warrior is leading a group of people encouraging them to march ahead.
