The Stunning Qila-I-Kuhna Mosque in the Old Fort in Delhi

Both the location and the literal meaning of the name of this mosque is ‘the mosque of the old fort’ and it was the congregational mosque of the fort.

According to the plaque installed near the Qila-I-Kuhna Mosque, it was built by Sher Shah in 1541.

The profuse decoration of the entrance gate and the various arches includes stone inlay using red and yellow sandstone combination. Together with white and black marble interleaving makes the mosque a masterpiece of medieval art.

The mosque is adorned with stone carvings and the tile work too is impressive. The most remarkable feature of the mosque is a large number of Jharokhas that are cantilevered enclosed opening which served as observation windows from the upper levels.

The octagonal turrets at the corners of the back wall are distinctive features of the medieval Indian style of architecture. The prayer hall measures about 50 x 15 meters.

The central facade is also more than 15 meters in height.

There are wide and strong walls around the mosque th at seem to be more of the outer wall of the fort since climbing over one of them I could see the streets and residential apartments of modern Delhi.

Have you been to a place of worship that had extraordinary decorations or art? I’d be interested in knowing your experiences.

Until then… Happy Guiding :blush:

The mosque has an impressive access ramp seen in the photos above and several smaller ramps on its pathway that can easily accommodate a wheelchair to be able to enjoy the views from the outside and all parts of the monument.

Thanks for letting us know about this amazing Mosque, @TusharSuradkar

Beautiful photos. I agree, the access ramp is impressive.

I want to inform you that, to keep Connect organised, I’ve merged together your two posts about the same subject

Thank you for intervening @ErmesT

Merging the article seems to the only option on the Connect forum to remove duplicates since I can guarantee that it got posted twice without my knowledge.

Having realized this I was in the process of replacing the second article with the description of a new place. I think that would have made it look all good.

Another problem that I now face is when trying to replace the comment which has the entire article as its contents with a simpler line so that it doesn’t look silly to a casual reader, it won’t let me save changes to the comment. This is perhaps because it is not a comment but in reality the merged article. Yet I don’t understand why it won’t let me edit the comment. Maybe it is working as designed but doesn’t look good either, in this case.

That’s weird, @TusharSuradkar

You should be able to edit everything posted by you without any issue

Thank you for the comment @venkatesh322

However, this is just the mosque inside the fort and not the fort itself.

I am writing a separate article about the fort shortly :blush:

@TusharSuradkar

@C_T

All photos are really very good @TusharSuradkar . Very nice post with good information. Thanks buddy for sharing.
