The story of Rajbari Complex, Kalna

Hi friends,today i am shearing the story of Kalna Rajbari complex.

Kalna is situated on the western bank of the Bhagirathi.It is a city,a municipality and headquarters of Kalna subdivision in Purba Bardhaman district in the state of West Bengal India.Kalna in known as the ‘City of Temples’, this place is famous for its terracotta temples built in the 18th century.Kalna Rajbari complex is a one of the top cultural Tourism spot in Kalna.

  1. This is the main entrance of Kalna Rajbari Complex.

  1. Pratapeswar Temple : Located at the left of the entrance,This temple was built in 1849 by Ramhari Mistri under the supervision of Pearykumari Devi, first wife of Raja Pratapchand.All the four sides of the temple has rich terracotta ornamentation depicting images of gods and goddesses to scenes from the great epics. It also contains panels depicting war scenes and also scenes from day to day life.Rich terracotta ornamentations adorns its four sides with scenes from daily life and from mythology figures of Hindu gods and goddesses in red burnt brick panels – the most notable one is the Mahishasur Mardini.

  1. Ras Mancha - There is an octagonal Ras-mancha next to the Pratapeshwar temple.The Ras-mancha is an octagonal, roofless, brick-built structure with 24 arches. The autumnal ras-lila of Lord Krishna used to be staged here.It have a hexagonal structure, with 8 open arched gateways housed in larger hexagon roofless enclosure with 24 open gate arches was once a theatrical stage.

  1. The entrance of Lalji temple.

  1. Lalji Temple : Built in 1739 AD by Rani Brojo Kishori,the wife of Maharaja Jagat Ram.The Lalaji Temple dedicated to Radha-Krishna. It is a three-storeyed, brick-built, Pancha-vimshati
    ratna (25 ratnas or pinnacles).

  1. Pancharatna Temple : Built in the 19th century.Placed beside Lalji temple,Its a compilation of of 5 Aat –Chala (eight sloped roofs) temples of different size.The temples dedicated to Lord Shiva.

  1. Krishna Chandraji Temple : Built by Raja Trilokchand in the name of his mother Lakshmikumari Devi between 1751 -1752 AD. The main deity of this temple is Krishnachandra and Radha.It has a three arched entrance on all sides. It also has a rich terracotta ornamentation in its front facade, depicting scenes from mythologies,epics and even day to day life.

  1. This is the main residential building of Kalna Rajbari

  1. This is the rajbari ground,placed just beside main residential building of Kalna Rajbari.

This sounds very much like the Temple City of Cambodia that is known as Siem Reap. There are uncountable temples in the Angkor Archeological park alone. I don’t even know many of them. I only visited about 40 temples @SumanBhadra You have read some of them.
