Pune is famously known as the Oxford of the East, meaning the seat of knowledge and learning.
Pune is home to 7 universities, 50 engineering colleges, 8 medical colleges, numerous architecture colleges, other colleges, schools, and training institutes.
People in Pune love reading a lot.
There are numerous public libraries in Pune, some are stationary and some are mobile.
I come across a few recently.
The first public library,
reading room, is adjacent to the Mahatma Phule Museum.
I have been visiting the museum for more than 25 years.
We also had a local guides meetup here last year. It is called the Chetan Dattaji Library.
The next is a mobile van Library which moves from one place to another in Pune and facilitates subscribers to borrow books without having to leave their homes.
The van is normally stationed in a narrow lane adjacent to the Pustak Bhandar book shop on Laxmi Road.
The slogan on the Van is interesting - वाचाल तर वाचाल - meaning, you will survive if you read ![]()
The third public library
reading place that I came across recently, was in Guruwar Peth. This was outside the Tushar Garments shop.
The name was DevaBhau Vachanalay.
Public libraries and reading like these are looked upon as the jewels in Pune.
They encourage more reading and less doom-scrolling through the endless WhatsApp groups that are prevalent in India, especially the countless LG groups ![]()
Do you know a public library or reading spot in your town?
