The Popular Afghani Styled Bread

Afghan breads cooked in a traditional styled Tandoors are very popular in Saudi Arabia. It is very common to see customers standing queues in front of these restaurants during the evening hours to buy these breads.

The breads are usually baked in circular/oval/rectangular shapes. White flour is used for the preparation of the dough and black cumin seeds are sometimes sprinkled on the bread for the sake of decoration and taste, and sometimes holes are punched in the dough to add texture to the bread. The baker will manually spread the dough around the Tandoor, as a result of which the dough quickly puffs up and starts to color and emit a fresh bread smell. Tongs are used by the baker to pull out the bread from the Tandoor. In our local restaurants it is common practice to carry the hot Afghani breads in the recycled paper based packaging. In the Arab region it is very common to serve this kind of breads with the meals.

Cheese, Sugar, Zaatar is also added as toppings and sometimes sandwiched in the dough to make a new variety of Afghani styled bread. The cost of one Afghani bread (Tameez in local language) is 1 SAR (US$0.27) and the cost of Cheese, Zaatar Bread is 5 SAR (US$1.33). One Afghani bread will be sufficient for at least two servings.

Hi @fasi6083 ,

Thanks for sharing your photos. This bread sounds delicious and looks like it’s easy to make. Just the other day I ate something similar and I am pretty sure that I will like your version too. Do you eat bread every day in Saudi Arabia? What are your favourite toppings?

@MoniDi Thanks for your comment, I don’t eat this styled bread quite often because of its high calorie value (~250 calories/per bread, with 42 grams of Carbohydrates). My kids love the cheese Afghani bread with Zaatar toppings, we usually eat this bread once a week (Especially, during weekends). Zaatar is a popular spices mixture which is used in the majority of Mediterranean foods to enhance the flavor of food.
