The place of Jackals

This is Mapungubwe National Park, with Mapungubwe meaning the place of Jackals. This is a national park located in the far Northern part of South Africa in Limpopo bordering Botswana and Zimbabwe.

I went there recently with the team and we had a great time. We saw animals such as Giraffe, elephants and some antelopes. The highlight of the trip was Mapungubwe World Heritage Site ,

Why a World Heritage Site:

  • Criterion (ii): The Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape contains evidence for an important interchange of human values that led to far-reaching cultural and social changes in Southern Africa between AD 900 and 1300.
  • Criterion (iii): The remains in the Mapungubwe cultural landscape are a remarkably complete testimony to the growth and subsequent decline of the Mapungubwe state which at its height was the largest kingdom in the African sub-continent.
  • Criterion (iv): The establishment of Mapungubwe as a powerful state trading through the East African ports with Arabia and India was a significant stage in the history of the African sub-continent.
  • Criterion (v): The remains in the Mapungubwe cultural landscape graphically illustrate the impact of climate change and record the growth and then decline of the kingdom of Mapungubwe as a clear record of a culture that became vulnerable to irreversible change. Source - UNESCO

it is believed that this is where civilization in Southern Africa started. A formal social heirachy set up with evidence related to bartering with other countries were discovered here. We also enjoyed the scenery on top of the hill. You have to climb 147 steps to find yourself on top of Mapungubwe World Heritage Site also known as Mapungubwe Hill.

AAnother interesting part was when we went to the Confluence, this is a view point wherein you are elevated on top of one of the hills and you standing in South Africa but you can see the Shashe river and the Limpopo river coming together forming boundaries between Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa. We had to see animals grazing in other countries whilst watching the beautiful Sunset. We were there for a day and I wish we were there to also do the sunset game drive, visit the tree top as well as the heritage museum. However, we had a good experience.

I had to share with you so that you also know about what I have been up to recently.

My name, is Mashudu Ramudzuli, I am from South Africa in Limpopo Province and I thank you all for affording me this platform to share information about my ENVIRONMENT.

Pssssst! I don’t know where the name Mapungubwe came from and one will not walk across many jackals as many people might think :joy: .

Peace.
