The Pavagadh Temple, dedicated to Goddess Mahakali, offers a profound spiritual journey. My trip began with a scenic car ride to the ropeway station. From there, a thrilling cable car ascent took me to the highest point of the hill, providing breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
From the cable car drop off point, a stepped pathway led me through a vibrant pilgrimage route. The path was lined with colorful shops selling ritual items and offerings, creating a lively and devout atmosphere. Along the way, I passed by a serene lake and several ancient Jain temples, adding to the rich cultural tapestry of the site.
The final ascent to the main temple involved climbing a steep staircase of over 160 steps carved into a vertical cliff face. The narrow path and the presence of numerous devotees created a sense of shared faith as we queued to enter the inner sanctum.
A unique and striking feature of this temple is the chamber located above the shikhara. This chamber, known as a ‘Chilla,’ was once used for meditation by a Muslim saint. The priest informed me it was a must visit, highlighting the site’s remarkable blend of different faiths and its inclusive spiritual heritage.
