The Name Game - October, 2023

Overview

This post follows on from the September 2023 Name Game post and continues on with the Who am I twist. In my signature below is a GIF containing thumbnail photos of Local Guides here on Connect. You will also see in the body of this post a set of clues about these Local Guides, and referred to as the Who am I clues. Your challenge, should you accept it, is to firstly name these Local Guides and secondly, match the clues with them.

The Rules & Conditions of Entry

So that we don’t have a bust up at the end, here are the rules of the game!

1. Hit this link,

2. Add “The Name Game - October, 2023” as the Message Subject

3. Copy and paste the following in the opening comment to your message > Here are my answers to the October Name Game (note that this is a link to the current Name Game post).

4. Add your answers in the form of a list numbered 1 to 8 with your guess for the name (Connect username and not the personal name and without the @) of each Local Guide as they appear from left to right in the GIF.

5. Against each of your Local Guide name answers, enter in brackets the letter ID (A,B,C…or H) of the clue from the Who am I clues listed below that you believe best fits that Local Guide. For example, if you think that the first Local Guide is myself and from the list of clues the one having an ID of C best fits me then you would show your answer as follows:

6. Select the Send Message button.

7. Each name you get right earns you 1 point but you must get the order right so for example if you say that the 2nd person in the GIF is me but in actual fact I’m the 6th person then you don’t get the point.

8. If you get all 8 names correct and in the right order you will earn a bonus of 2 points

9. For each Who am I clues that you attribute to the right Local Guide you get bonus points as follows:

   So if you get 1 right you get 1 bonus point. If you get 5 right you get 8 bonus point. If you get all 8 right you get the maximum 34 bonus points. Therefore, as you can see, the maximum number of points you can get in this round of the Name Game is 44 points (10 points for part (a) and 34 points for part (b))!

10. If you can’t work it out or are uncertain then at least have a guess. You just never know, you might guess right

11. Once your entry is received and checked, your points will be added to the table shown below. Local Guide points to date are also shown in this table and entries will be made in order of submission and total points to date.

12. Points are carried forward through to the end of the year and the Local Guide(s) with the highest points at the end of the year will be declared the winner(s) and get the final kudos

13. Entry is open to all Local Guides but only one entry per Local Guide is allowed!

14. Entries of anyone caught cheating, like copying someone else’s answers or colluding will not be counted and would lead to your instant disqualification from the round

15. Entries close at the end of September October or when the October November Name Game post is posted which ever is the latest.

16. If you decide to change any part of your answer or add to it then you must resubmit the whole of your answer and not just the changes/additions you’ve made.

17. These rules can change at any time

18. The judge’s (moi’s) decision is final!

Who am I clues. In no particular order…

1. As well as unique destinations, I love exploring Vegan Restaurants.

2. I’m from Ohio and once worked out that it would take approximately 1.5 trillion photos to take one picture every 10 meters across Earth.

3. My favorite food is Indian and Mexican

4. When I first joined the Top 100 leaderboards I had total photo views of around 230m and today my total photo views are just over 650m from just over 19.1k photos but I’m no longer a Local Guide.

5. I was a Level 8 and need to get better at updating before these leaderboards come out. (Thanks @JustJake for discovering that this LG is back to being a Level 8).

6. I’m from Iceland and registered for participation on the Top 100 leaderboards in June 2023 and since then my photo views have nearly doubled.

7. I made my first appearance on the Top 100 leaderboards in September 2021 and my star photo then had almost 3.25m views. Sadly since then it’s been somewhat of a red star.

8. I’m a 360 images fan and would love to get my first drone to capture 360s Aerials.

Do make sure you always check the instructions as the rules do change from time to time and are very likely to change before the year end.

I’ve checked the instructions and it seems that we’ve been disqualified before even starting based on rule 15. What sort of trickery is this @AdamGT . I’ll accept 11 bonus points for finding that. Actually, I’d better make it 12.

Well done @JustJake on firstly getting a perfect score again as did @Mo_TravelleerX and secondly, for find reading the rules so carefully and finding my mistakes and discovering that LG mentioned in Who am I clue E is back to being a Level 8. I’ve also now corrected the closing date for this round (rule #15). Good catches Jake.

Finally submitted my answer after 2 sittings… This one was tougher.

I did notice one error in one of the tips @AdamGT . Not sure how much I’m allowed to say, because I’m not sure if it’s misleading on purpose…

Well done to you all that have to date submitted entries for the October episode, and @EvaBar most recently. Just had a quick look at this and I can say that with everyone still close, looks like anyone in the top 8 could win this so every point you earn now might be what’s needed to cross the line first

@AdamGT … These clues are driving me crazy is clue E accurate? Did this LG shift level again???

Yes I have to confess that this is a tricky and confusing one @MelTG and a couple of other LGs also raised this directly with me so to all struggling with it in this vary last stretch, while to be fair I cannot totally spill the beans, hopefully the following will help.

If you read through the discussions on the various October leaderboard posts, you will find that there were a number of issues with the originally posted leaderboards. In particular, there were two LGs on the wrong leaderboards and some missing altogether. Because of this, and in particular the impact that this had on the leaderboards, one or two weeks into the month, I reposted almost all of the leaderboards.

Now against this background the Who am I clue in question relates to one of those LGs that for some reason I either had at the wrong LG level or missing altogether from the originally posted October leaderboards. He/she hadn’t been updating his/her data and he/she made the exact comment “I need to get better at updating things before these leaderboards come out” and it was @JustJake that brought to my attention that this LG was back to being a Level 8. I know that this is friendly competition, but I wonder if Jake could jump in here and clarify or add to this.

A final comment here. I know that the search functionality of Connect leaves a lot to be desired at times and may not be so helpful or yield good search results when it comes to The Name Game clues, and for this reason, with this sort of puzzle, a strategy that can work is to find the easy answers and leave matching the last Who am I clue(s) to just fall into place. In this month’s Name Game, the stumbling block are the Who am I clues D and E but to overcome this, there is a rather simple way that you can use to conquer clue D which then leaves E to be that final missing and default answer in the puzzle’s jig-saw.

@AdamGT thank you but this makes it even more confusing the particular guide I thought the level clue applied to, doesn’t fit because I’m seeing a different level when I click on their profile. But I see in the October discussions that there were some issues with their data. Maybe I need more coffee

Oh I’m sorry to hear that @MelTG , really I am. Perhaps have a few coffees and let’s see if @JustJake will jump in a add to what I’ve said either publicly or privately but again I acknowledge that this is not an easy one.

I’m not sure what can be said @AdamGT . I don’t want to break any rules about collusion. Though, I’m typically pretty good with keeping up on the boards, I’m still reading through the July Points post – for Dexter’s sake. Maybe @MelTG should be hanging out there, too .
