The Maps team DOES listen to our feedback

About 2 months ago, I posted here about an incredibly inappropriate Dutch translation of one of the recently added categories (Vehicle wrapping service). But when I was checking out a notification about one of the category edits I had made around that time (to apply that new category) - which had gone from Pending to Approved - I noticed that this Dutch translation had actually been adapted from “Service voor het inpakken van voertuigen” (read the original post to find out why this was so horribly wrong) to “Autobestickering” - which makes a lot more sense.

So for all those who think the Google Maps team is simply ignoring all the feedback we send them (and often also complain about it on Connect and social media): they’re not. Here is a clear case from a mistake being reported… and fixed. Obviously I have no evidence that my reporting had anything to do with this, but given the fact that the feedback was very specific, for a relatively small language, and that I reported it using several different channels (Connect was just one of them, but former Google Moderator @Giu_DiB did promise to forward it to the relevant team), I am inclided to find the likelihood that my reporting is totally unrelated rather small.

You might also think that 2 months is a long period of time to get such a “minor” thing changed (the actual change of the record in the database takes just a minute, right?), but my experience in big projects where a lot of people and teams are involved (and possibly several people have to approve steps) 2 months is like stellar speed :slightly_smiling_face:

My advice to all local guides, therefore: keep giving feedback, keep reporting problems and use every channel you can think of! (But do bear in mind that this is of cource never a guarantee for success… there are quite a few other things I have reported that seemingly have never lead to any change.)

UPDATE 02/04/2022

Check out what happened to a similar case that @MortenCopenhagen submitted in this post. Basically the same thing has happened there (in roughly the same amount of time) - supporting the evidence that changes being made after sending feedback on Connect is definitely a thing!

Hi @JanVanHaver

Congrats on making a lasting impression on Google Maps. I’m sure they listen to you… So to test this I have just posted this idea to get 2 parallel translation mistakes in the Danish language fixed also.

Please see and like:

Great use case for submitting feedback, @JanVanHaver - I know for some issues, it may seem they’ll never get to them or address them, but I think considering our positions as Local Guides, we should encourage it. If no one believes in their voices being heard and no one raises awareness, then the respective teams would never know what’s going on :slightly_smiling_face: .

Hello friend, @JanVanHaver

Happy to hear that your feedback worked…

I do have experienced it, but rarely.

However… (You wrote)

“My advice to all local guides, therefore: keep giving feedback, keep reporting problems and use every channel you can think off…”

i do agree & suggest the same… Also I’m following this wherever possible.

They do listen @JanVanHaver I sometimes think it may have something to do with your Creditability as a local guide and I sometimes think it’s related to your location, We know you have great creditability and that’s why they listen.

More on location … I’m in Canada and my edits and changes generally get approved or not in minutes, I know that’s not the same for guides in other countries, ( could be the amount of changes or edits based per country, I’m not sure)

Anyway we need to continue to clean up the map.
