Standing tall in the heart of Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, the Brihadeeshwara Temple has always fascinated me for one special reason, its towering vimana.
Even from a distance, it feels like the structure rises effortlessly into the sky, carrying a thousand years of stories within its stones.
Built over a thousand years ago by Rajaraja Chola I, this temple is not just a place of worship but a living testimony to the Chola dynasty’s architectural brilliance. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is entirely made of granite, which is incredible considering there are no granite quarries nearby.
The vimana, or the main sanctum tower, stands at around 66 meters (216 feet) high, one of the tallest of its kind in the world. It’s hard not to be awestruck when you stand before it.
The carvings are so intricate, celestial beings, dancers, and mythological scenes that you almost forget it’s stone and not storytelling frozen in time.
It’s believed that the top stone (kalasha) alone weighs nearly 80 tons, and was lifted using a massive 6 km-long ramp made of mud and logs. And one of my favorite facts is that the tower’s shadow never falls on the ground at noon. Even after a millennium, that precision leaves you speechless.
While the vimana captures the skyline, the eastern gopuram captures your attention the moment you walk in.
Called Rajarajan Tiruvayil, it stands nearly 30 meters high, covered with sculptures that tell tales of devotion and power. Each figure, each curve seems to speak of the Chola artisans’ incredible craftsmanship.
There’s another entrance, the Keralantakan Tiruvayil, equally grand, with inscriptions about temple life from royal donations to records of dancers and musicians who served here. Passing through these gateways feels like walking through history itself.
The way the gopuram aligns perfectly with the sanctum is no coincidence, it’s an intentional design that draws your eyes and heart toward the deity even before you step in.
