The works on the first chapels, stairways and church proceeded through the 18th century. Every chapel represents a part of a biblical story and has a fountain nearby. The main part of the stairs has a zigzag pattern. The staircase has 583 steps. To facilitate the access to the church, a funicular was built (the first one in the Iberian peninsula).

The first mention of this place dates from 1373 (a chapel, which was rebuilt in the 15th century). In 1629 a church was built here with six chapels. The present sanctuary started being built in 1722. In the 19th century the area was turned into a park.

Berühmt für seine 583 Stufen, die im Zickzackmuster angeordnet sind. Jede Kapelle entlang der Treppe zeigt einen Teil einer biblischen Geschichte und hat einen nahe gelegenen Brunnen. Stammt aus dem Jahr 1373 mit bedeutenden Bauperioden im 15., 17., 18. und 19.Jahrhundert. Ursprünglich eine Kapelle, entwickelte sie sich ab 1722 zum heutigen Heiligtum.
