The Maheshwar Temple in Assonora, Goa, is a sacred Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. The main sanctuary contains a Shiva Linga, protected by a striking seven-headed snake hood, a powerful symbol of defense. An image of this can be seen inside the sanctuary.
Following the traditional Goan temple design, the entrance opens into a long rectangular hall. The main building has a distinct conical roof, a common feature in many regional temples. Outside the main sanctuary, Nandi, the bull and vehicle of Lord Shiva, is seated, facing his Lord.
Beyond the main deity, the temple complex may also house shrines for other deities, like Goddess Parvati, Shiva’s divine consort. This design mirrors the typical village temple, serving as a significant spiritual and cultural center for the community.
