Michigan Avenue is the shopping paradise of Chicago and though it exists in several disjointed segments it is called the Magnificient Mile.
Chicagoers say that the hotels along The Magnificent Mile welcome you to think of them as a home away from home while shops along The Magnificent Mile are dedicated to your well-being. So I did a casual window shopping for a simple-looking Minsk fur overcoat was found to be retailing at USD 3500 making me realize that a lot of money would be required for attaining well-being by spending money.
The boundaries of the shopping area extend north to North Avenue; south to Randolph Street; east to Lake Michigan; and west to the Chicago River. The origins of The Magnificent Mile are interesting. When the DuSable bridge was opened in 1920 it transformed a single dirt-lane road into The Magnificent Mile in downtown Chicago. It is a 13-block stretch along the scenic lakefront. The Magnificent Mile is packed with things to do and see, including Chicago’s best attractions and many historic landmarks.
On one end is Lake Michigan and the other end is the terracotta Wrigley Building skyscraper. The Wilis Tower and the Navy Pier that I visited are not far from this street and I went to these places simply by walking. Some of the other noteworthy buildings are the neo-Gothic Tribune Tower and the historic Chicago Water Tower, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Millennium Park.
I saw there were hop-on-hop-off buses and also trolley tours which are conducted in semi-open buses much like this one in the Ramoji Film City. I also come to know about the 360 Chicago Observatory located at the top of the John Hancock Center for panoramic views of Chicago. but could not go there due to time constraints.
Whether you are sightseeing during the day in Chicago or enjoying the famous nightlife, the infectious energy of the Windy City will make it a trip to remember.
Have you ever indulged in window shopping on a prominent shopping street in a town other than your home town? I’d be interested in knowing your experiences.
Until then… Happy Guiding
