The Local Guides program means freedom and confidence to explore any place in the world!
First off, Google Maps is amazing all by itself. In just one click, you can literally see any place in the world that you are curious about. Then, if you want to learn whether it’s well-liked or not (through the reviews), you can easily check that out. If you don’t feel 100% confident that you want to visit a restaurant, hotel or even an activity, you can save it in your “want to go places bucket list”.
My favorite aspect of Google Maps are the recommendations and reviews from the Local Guides. I feel that you’re getting honest advice from a friend that already went to that special place that you are planning to go and they’re giving you an insider’s tip to whether it’s worth going or not. It saves me a lot of time, money and disappointment of having to find out whether a restaurant or place is worth going to. It also gives you insight as to what awesome places you should check out that you may never have thought of going to!
When I moved to Chicago in 2013, I didn’t know anybody or anywhere to go. That’s when I found myself searching for Google Maps to see the places that I shouldn’t miss in the city. I found so many places - too many! Knowing that I couldn’t go to all of them, I start looking at the comments, photos, and 4-5 stars reviews from the Google Local Guides. Trusting that they were giving me good advice, I started to explore and learn about my new home. Local Guides gave me the confidence to try new places and showed me things that I never would’ve found on my own.
So when I tried a new place, I started giving reviews too! I started with my fave places in the city - adding photos, recommending dishes to other visitors or new Chicagoans like me, and little by little I have learned how much you can help people and special businesses/places connect and grow.
