The Local Guides Program Is A Virtual Memory Book That Helps Others

It’s A Virtual Memory Book

Being part of the Local Guides program has brought so much purpose and joy to my life! As I mentioned in my video (https://youtu.be/qAQX3ZiA1i4) about how and why I became a Local Guide, I love taking and having pictures of the places I’ve gone so I can re-experience them in the future. That’s where it all started and that’s largely why I continue to participate in this program today. There’s something so unique about being able to go to my Google Maps profile (https://www.google.com/maps/contrib/114270593394993043814) and see all the places I have been, along with what I felt about going there and the photos I have captured. I love that this program gives me a space to essentially have a virtual memory book and gives me something to look forward to no matter where I go or what I am doing.

It Helps Others

Another part of why I adore this program is knowing that it is making an impact on others. It still blows my mind just how many times an individual picture may be viewed. A friend of mine, who isn’t a Local Guide, pointed out to me that they had taken notice of my reviews of places. Hearing this certainly warmed my heart and has encouraged me to keep posting! Though I try my best not to be on my phone much when I am with others, I make an effort to take a least one photo of the places I go so I can play my role in society as a Local Guide. If for whatever reason I don’t get a photo, I also try to give myself grace and look at it as a good reason to go there again. The only issue with that is that my “want to go” list is already overwhelming long in the city I call home, New Orleans, Louisiana. I get excited when I hear of a new restaurant that I am interested in visiting and having them saved and seeing pictures and reviews makes it easier to make a decision when an opportunity arises. When you live in such a culturally rich city, it’s easy to let the good times roll- at a restaurant, a park, a concert hall, a church, etc. There really is something for everyone. Check out my list that highlights this Melting Pot (https://www.google.com/maps/placelists/list/JlSbRLcxIIRjL5Z1YuNgNA4cJTQBjQ?hl=en).

I am glad to be the guinea pig so people can best take their pick! It challenges me to be forward thinking about what future visitors would want to know about a particular place. Every review made can be so helpful to others, as I know often times they are helpful to me.

Thank you, Google for providing such a rewarding program!
