The Knight of the Seas, Miguel Grau

Hello, my friends!

I wanted to share some historic information about my country. It is related to one of the most admired Peruvians of all time. There is actually a holiday every year because of him (October 8th). It`s Miguel Grau.

Miguel María Grau Seminario (1834-1879) was a Peruvian military sailor and admiral of the Peruvian Navy. During the Pacific War, he commanded the Huáscar monitor and kept the Chilean squad at bay for five months, finally succumbing heroically in the Angamos naval battle, facing superior forces. He is considered the maximum hero of Peru. His generosity towards the enemy on the battlefield earned him the nickname of The Knight of the Seas. He has also been chosen as El Peruano del Milenio (Peruvian of millennia).

Here a very nice statue in his honor.

Hi @marcorp ,

Thanks for sharing this interesting story with us, sometimes we need to remind ourselves who true heroes are. They inspire us to follow a greater good and positive values. I liked especially the fact that he showed generosity in very hard times.

How do you celebrate him on October 8th? Is there a special parade or other kind of events to honor his memory?

@Ivi_Ge hello Ivi. It is an important holiday but citizens just stay at home relaxing with their families to be quite honest. There are official ceremonies though, especially from the marine corps. What about your country? what is the most important holiday?

Hi @marcorp , sorry for the delayed response. We have so many holidays during the year and it is difficult for me to say which one is the most important holiday. I will share with you some of them: National Day (Day of Liberation) - 3rd of March, Unification Day - 6th of September and Independence Day - 22nd of September.

On 3rd of March we celebrate the anniversary of its Liberation from the five century-long Ottoman rule. It is one of the biggest holidays in the country and it is a National holiday.

On 6th of September Bulgaria celebrates its Unification Day. Bigger celebrations would be held in Plovdiv.

On 22nd of September Bulgaria celebrates the anniversary of the proclamation of independence from the Ottoman Empire. It is a non-working day and you can enjoy the parade in the center of the capital - Sofia, or there are great celebrations in Veliko Turnovo.
