The Karangahake Gorge walkway

The Karangahake Gorge is located between the Coromandel and Kaimai ranges. It is steep and tortuous, formed by the Ohnemuri River. State Highway 2 connects the three small towns of Paeroa, Waikino, and Waihi through the canyon. It is also the main link between the Waikato area and the Bay of Plenty. The main line of the East Coast Railway once traversed the canyon, and part of it, a tunnel of about 1,000 meters, has now been changed into a pedestrian walkway, which is combined with the natural scenery of the canyon to become a well-known tourist attraction.

Karangahake Gorge has a close relationship with mining. Until the 21st century, there are still a lot of companies conducting exploration and mining locally. Of course, the method used is no longer the rough and destructive method that used to be. Some of the remains preserved in the lowest part of the canyon show the former glory here, and the pedestrian walkway in the canyon was built for mining.

One of 101 things to do as listed by the AA (Automobile Association)

Most tourists will choose the 3.2 km Rail Tunnel Loop and the 2.5 km windows Walk. Both are entry-level.
Carpark and public toilet are available.
Free of charge

I did the walk twice in a row - once with my kids and once with Scouts for camping at Waitawheta Camp

Thanks for tagging me @OliverKIWI and thanks for sharing. It is indeed a beautiful area with many good walks to do and swiimming in the river. Many years ago I gather up many rocks from there for landscaping a property I had at Mount Maunganui. I have also enjoyed many good beers at the Waikino Hotel.

I go through the gorge each time I visit New Zealand as my daughter lives in Tauranga.

No worries! It was a pleasant walk. There is an old saying in China - A kind man loves the mountains. A wise man loves water. We can have both here.

I like to collect some stones too - took a few when I visited Lake Ohau last time…

Haha, Lucky you had a few beers, I only had some Macs at Paeroa @TheEagleEye

Yes, it was quite dark inside and wet, slippery. The lights are on for the safety of the tourists. It takes about one hour and a half hour to get there by driving. @Austinelewex
