The only wooden-made, centuries-old, beautiful Muslim architectural masterpiece in South Asia is the Momin Mosque. Momin Uddin Akon of Udaytara Burirchar village in Mathbaria upazila of Pirojpur built the mosque in the early 19th century. He built the mosque with his own artistic ideas and experience. It is known as a wonderful example of art.

Construction work
In 1913, Momin Uddin Akon, a resident of Burirchar village of Mathbaria police station in Pirojpur district, started the construction of this mosque in his own house. The construction of this mosque was completed in 1920 after seven years. The Momin Mosque is a unique example of woodwork, the fruit of the tireless work of 21 skilled craftsmen. The mosque is 16 feet long, 12 feet wide and 15 feet high. The fence on all four sides is divided into three parts. The top and bottom are made of wooden crafts. Double fences on both sides. One type inside and another type outside. The inner crafted fence can be opened and separated. Momin Uddin Akon always supervised the construction work. He used to check its craftsmanship meticulously. Because it is made of many rare and valuable woods.

Materials
The mosque was built using ironwood and teakwood. The wood was collected from Myanmar, Tripura and Assam. Instead of iron nails, wooden beams were used in the structure. The 24-foot long and 18-foot wide mosque has a roof made of corrugated tin sheds.

Construction style
Its construction style is extraordinary and beautiful. A second double-paned tin canopy has been built in the middle of the roof to allow light and air to enter and enhance the beauty inside. The mosque has two windows on the north and south sides and four windows on the east and west. There is only one entrance on the east side with two doors with intricate carvings. This reveals the fine craftsmanship of the construction of the mosque.

Most of the houses in that village were made of wood. In addition, the village was full of various types of wood and fruit trees. That is why he planned to make the mosque in the design of various types of leaves, flowers and fruits like pineapples. These designs were made using natural colors on rare ironwood and Burmese teak wood.

Features
The main mosque has two windows on the north and south and four on the east and west. On the east, there is a single door with two pillars decorated with carvings. On its surface, there is Arabic calligraphy on wood. The use of various calligraphy in the decoration gives the mosque its uniqueness.

People come from different parts of the country to see the mosque every day. It is being preserved by the government’s Department of Archaeology. Although some minor damage to the wood or paint occurred due to monsoons at different times, it was later repaired and its beauty was maintained. A 400-page book published by UNICEF on the world’s unique mosques contains an illustrated description of the mosque. Apart from this, only the photograph of this mosque in the Barisal division has been placed in the architectural gallery of the National Museum since 2014.

It’s a truly unique mosque based on my experience. While I’ve seen many wooden houses in my hometown of Munshiganj but I’ve never heard of or seen a mosque made entirely of wood. This blog is filled with detailed information about it @SanjayBDLG bhai.
