In Australia the simple and humble rice appears in many of the cultural dishes available here. It is a staple food and is grown locally as well as imported. For the student earning their way it may be their only food for the day or it may be something accompanying your meal as a side dish.
In Indonesia, rice is a must, @PaulPavlinovich . We cannot say we’ve had our meals when we’re not eaten rice, yet. We even eat rice noodle with rice, or deep fried potato cakes (in Indonesian we called it “Perkedel Kentang”) with rice.
Btw I’m surprised that in Australia you eat rice like that. My friend, Indonesian, he’s graduated from Melbourne. He told me that when he studied in Melbourne he never eat rice. Either it’s expensive or hard to find. Hahaa…
All good food and correct facts @PaulPavlinovich from rice eating country, we can even make dessert and sweet from both white rice and sticky rice/gluten rice. I have posted few articles about rice, sweet and cake made from rice too and many more.
Thanks @TusharSuradkar Rice Kheer sounds very interesting, my family make a Greek version of this called Rizogalo. Ours has cinnamon and sometimes nutmeg on top, but Kheer sounds quite exotic with some of the varieties, I looked at some of the recipes and saw cardamom and nuts and even rose water.
@iorikun301 I love Indonesian food, well the Melbourne variety anyway, there are some places which claim to be authentic. I am surprised for your friend, rice is cheap and available in every supermarket. Maybe your friend only went to burger shops :).
@FalguniP We call puffed rice “Rice Bubbles” and its a brand of cereal pretty well known in Australia and America and I’m sure other countries. I’ve been known to take the rice left over from the previous nights dinner, coat it in brown sugar, add milk and microwave to make it hot. Great breakfast :).
@Muhammad_Usman I I get that! I’m on a seefood diet. I see food and I eat it. That is my diet.
@Sophia_Cambodia We do that too, rice is a popular desert - whether it be the Greek version I mentioned above, or the english baked rice pudding both are common. You occasionally see sweet cakes and the like from food sellers.
Nice topic indeed, Rice we locally called it bhat (in Bengali ভাত). It is our main food in Bangladesh. We cook the rice with water and have with fish, vegetables and lentil.
Interesting subject and I loved reading everybody’s comments, as well as your post! I don’t have great photos but I’d like to jump in. On the contrary of Indonesia, in Bulgaria rice isn’t really a must, as @iorikun301 mentioned in his comment. However, I can think of some dishes that are traditional and include rice:
We have the stuffed peppers and as I don’t have pictures, I’ll refere to this great post by Local Guide @OlgaKlimchik .
“Chicken with rice” is a very well-known dish here and you can have it at any restaurant. Here’s my photo:
Despite not being native from Italy, alongside many other things Italian cuisine is famous for, rice has become a key element of our tradition. I wrote about risotto in the post you recalled, indeed: #TastyChallenge: Making champagne risotto.
Being risotto a recipe originally developed in the North of the country, also in Sicily, in the very South, where I come from, we have our specialty: arancini (litterally “little oranges”). Here you can see some arancini I pictured in Catania last year, different shape means different filling:
Thank you dear @Theenan they are from Cambodian cuisine but I believe we have similar or the same things. We had been influenced by Indian culture anyway
Luego he escribo el link. Gracias por presentar Este tema.
Wow what does rice mean, a lot i will say I am originally from Southern India and rice is a staple food for us. We just love rice. We make variety rice (lemon rice yogurt rice, fried rice) or just mix a gravy with the white rice or make the people’s choice " Biriyani " with it. In India we also make a dessert called Kheer made of rice, milk, sugar and saffron. Hmmmmmit’s the best dessert you can have. The humble rice is part of the diet of all people irrespective of their social status. Rice Rocks !!!
