The Heartbeat of Jim Thorpe: The Seth Thomas Clock Tower 🕰️

Hello friends! How are you all doing?. Today, I am off so that I wanted to drop this story in our Local Guides Connect that I hope you will enjoy. :heart_with_ribbon: . Yesterday, as some of you may know I shared a bit about the legendary athlete Jim Thorpe, his incredible impact on sports, society, and the unusual story of how this beautiful Pennsylvania town came to bear his name. :cowboy_hat_face: :right_arrow: Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvannia

If you haven´t read the story, check my post here :right_arrow: The Legend of Jim Thorpe: A Story of Resilience and a Town with a Unique Name

Today, I want to tell you about the clock tower :mantelpiece_clock: located right at the entrance of this beautiful town. It is an architectural gem :gem_stone: that makes every visitor want to stop and take a photo; the views honestly look like postcards! :right_arrow: Carbon County Courthouse

What do you think? @TusharSuradkar !

This clock tower is part of the Carbon County Courthouse , installed when the building was constructed between 1893 and 1894. It is famous primarily for being an “Original Seth Thomas.” To be honest, I didn’t know much about the Seth Thomas standard :light_bulb: , despite having taught about the Industrial Revolution at the university back in the day. After searching on Gemini, I found an explanation that really educated me on the subject. I’m sharing this specific part with you (the following paragraph is literally from the source):

“A ‘Seth Thomas Original’ is highly prestigious because the company represents the gold standard of American industrial history. For nearly 200 years, Seth Thomas was the most famous clockmaker in the U.S., and owning an original—specifically one from the 19th or early 20th century—is like owning a piece of the American Industrial Revolution.”

Another fascinating characteristic is that for decades, this clock had to be manually wound. This required a massive effort, as someone had to hand-crank the heavy lift weights daily. Recently, that changed, and the system is now electrically wound. :high_voltage:

The clock also features a huge bronze bell which, thanks to the town’s location inside a canyon, generates a distinctive echo. It was one of the first things I noticed when I arrived; the sound is simply different. It feels ancient, it feels vintage, and you truly feel transported back in time. :bell:

As a Local Guide, I was so excited that my family laughed at me because I couldn’t decide where to stand for the best angle—I wanted to take thousands of photos!. The day was sunny with clear skies so everything looked just perfect, however we missed a snowfall by just two weeks; seeing this landscape and the town covered in white would have been unforgettable. I hope to return pretty soon! :snowflake:

I hope you enjoyed this post and the photos!. During christmas festivities, Jim Thorpe is fully decorated and you can absolutely feel its special charm, at least I did, lol! :christmas_tree: :santa_claus: If you want to see more of what Jim Thorpe has to offer, check out the links and pictures below.

And as I always say… #letsguide!

What a fabulous way to welcome to a city @marcorp - with a clock tower :+1:
Nicely captured photos of this picturesque town.

The history behind the clock is interesting.
I remember usinga manually wound wrist watch for several decades until 2001.
It has to be operated daily to keep it running.

@TusharSuradkar absolutely love the entrance of this town. It is like 120 miles away from my house, I took the toll-free rural route to get there so it took me like 3 hours pretty much. Of course, absolutely worthwhile! :cowboy_hat_face: :sparkles:
