The Glow and Glitter of Akihabara, A Classic Image of Japan

The best time to visit Akihabara - the electric suburb of Tokyo is late evening.

After exiting the station, my initial impression was wow!

It was a district similar to Shibuya where I was staying.

There was a glow to where my eye could see.

No photograph can capture the magic of this place. One must be there in the moment to soak that in.

When I came out from the station it felt like in another universe.

Though I am not a fan of anime or arcades I was mainly hunting for Manga comics there.

Soon I found out that most tall buildings had entire floors dedicated to one section - anime, manga, arcades, toys, gaming devices, card collections, action figures, Gundam, gacha, panchiko pinball, and so on.

There was so much merch, short for merchandise, around, what’s not to love about this place?

Food also was not a problem as there were a lot of food shops near the Akihabara train station of the Tokyo metro.

Amazing atmosphere, I was told to be prepared to hear anime sounds all over the place and see big screens with anime characters.

In reality, the buildings and lights looked absolutely fabulous!

You can probably spend an entire day exploring this area and it will never be boring.

Make sure to carry your passport at these stores to avail the benefit of a tax reduction of 10%.

Akihabara is a must-visit if you are into gaming, especially retro consoles.

I realized that time flies in this zone but fortunately Tokyo metro works till late into the night.

Also keep in mind the claw machines that might burn your wallet.

As I moved on crossing one block after another, I noticed that the place was a vibrant explosion of neon signs and sounds since this is traditionally a home to retailers of electronics and gadgets in Tokyo.

This was the image that I had about Japan since my school days, and I felt fortunate to get a feel of “cool Japan”.

Before leaving I did one thing that is unimaginable in Japan, clicked a photo in the middle of a busy road to get the best shot of the entire Akihabara area.

But the traffic and the taxis seemed to be used to this since there were hundreds of other tourists from around the world doing the same - right there, in the middle of flowing traffic.

Here’s mine:

A heads up for those visiting here - photos of girls distributing shop pamphlets are seen as a nuisance and are frowned upon.

Hello dear friend, @TusharSuradkar

Amazing captures - technically great night shots… Nice!

Your beautiful shots reminded me about the Time Square of New York where I used to spend time in 2006…(Hope the year is right)…

Thanks for sharing this PhotoWalk album… very interesting…

Fully agree…cool Japan!

But, I was amazed to see the board “DVD Games” in Japan in 2024? :astonished:  :bangbang:

Akiba is very interesting…

Thank you for the appreciation @Annaelisa though this is seen only in a small area of Tokyo and not everywhere as one might think.

Thank you @TravellerG :+1: for the appreciation.

Yes, Times Square comes naturally to mind though the major difference is that there are many more neon signs in Times Square, that provides a rich experience.

Comparatively in Akihabara, there is artificial illumination using flood lights on buildings.

I was there too in 2008, though unfortunately in the evening.

This was in the early morning 7 am to catch the sightseeing bus.

Hi @TusharSuradkar

Thanks for sharing so many pictures and story about Akihabara. Just realized that it’s in Tokyo

I’m not a fan of manga just like you, but this place is surely a paradise for manga lovers, isn’t it?

I remember that there’s one manga store in my neighborhood named “Akihabara” as well. No wonder that they chose that name.

Your description of Akihabara truly captures the essence of this electric paradise! The way you described stepping out of the station and being greeted by the glowing lights and vibrant atmosphere is spot on. It’s like being transported into another world filled with endless wonders of anime, manga, and gaming.

I agree that no photograph can fully capture the magic of Akihabara—you have to experience it in person to understand its charm. The sheer variety of merchandise and the dedicated floors for different fandoms is a dream come true for any enthusiast.

Your tip about carrying a passport for tax reductions is super helpful, and it’s good to know about the late-running Tokyo metro for those of us who might lose track of time exploring.

Thank you for sharing your experience and the heads-up about taking photos of pamphlet distributors. Akihabara sounds like an unforgettable adventure, and your post makes me want to visit even more!

Happy travels!
