I’m grateful to have reached 1K+ followers here — such a big milestone for me! Sadly, Google has decided to remove the followers & following feature, so this part of our journey ends here.
I’ll still be active in the Local Guide community, sharing places, photos, and reviews as always. Thank you for being part of this experience — your support truly means a lot.
I really liked the feature. The people I follow, from where I live in Tampa, Florida, it shows all their new reviews when I open my maps and I loved to learn new stuff to do with my reviews also. I would normally follow people that are at a level higher to see everything they do and try to make new discoveries. So I really am sad they are taking away the feature. I didn’t want it to be like social media, I don’t really have social media anyways , but it was cool to have people following my Local Guide contributions and action!
Another reason I use the “follow” feature on Google Maps is to avoid businesses with fake reviews and save time. Since I move between cities several times a year, I look for local guides who seem authentic and relatable before I arrive, and I follow them.
Mostly staying in Vietnam over the last few years has made this habit essential. Many businesses have inflated ratings, making it difficult to trust the overall score. For example, if a restaurant has 4.8 stars from 200 reviews, I check the newest reviews and look at the reviewer profiles. When many reviews come from accounts with fewer than three reviews, it’s often a red flag (in my opinion) that fake reviews are being used to boost ratings. This could mean a higher chance of a disappointing visit.
By following trusted local guides who I can relate to, I can skip this vetting process and rely on their recommendations. My goal is not to connect with them personally, but simply to find good spots, save time, and avoid fake reviews and unauthentic businesses. Once I leave a city where I don’t plan to return, I unfollow them.
As many of you know, Google will soon close the follower feature on Google Maps. For me, this means I will lose more than 400+ Fllowers I’ve built with other contributors who followed my journey.
The follower option was a small but meaningful way to stay connected, exchange encouragement, and build friendships across the Local Guides community. Losing it feels like losing part of the bond we’ve grown while contributing to make Maps better for everyone.
How did it help you connect with fellow Local Guides?
What do you think could replace this to keep our community spirit alive?
Even though this feature is closing, I hope we can continue to stay connected here on Local Guides Connect, where our conversations and collaborations remain strong.
Let’s keep inspiring each other to contribute, share stories, and grow together as a community.
@SophatCHY I hope you’re well.
I’ll share the same opinion as other posts on the same topic:
For me, the purpose of Maps isn’t to gain followers, but rather to help the community in your country and in other countries, with good locations, good services, good infrastructure, accessibility, and more. From the moment you start seeing follower numbers, you’re turning a place into a social network, and this isn’t a social media space; after all, that’s what social media is for.
Furthermore, because of these followers, many profiles with no content have started to appear, which ends up creating discomfort for the community, which has to report these profiles and remove them from circulation.
You’re not losing friends, because those who truly admire your activities can keep in touch with you in other places, or even on Guides.
Sorry, no. I believe privacy concerns are driving Google’s decisions on this.
Some local guides groups have organized private whatsapp or telegram groups to facilitate quicker and direct communication between LGs.
This is announcing the removal of the following and followers feature on Google maps. I’m sure we all saw that notification that says; Following will no longer be available from Sept 2025. I can confirm from my ends that on Tuesday 16th of September it’s finally gone.
Although it’s not something I am proud of,yet we will miss it one way or the other. I believe it’s better gone. We don’t want Google maps to become another social media. Some local guides are proud of it but it has lost it’s use.
I was following 34 local guides but had 5,871 followers. I wasn’t for follow me and I follow you back. I only followed those I knew and I trust. I Wonder what is your opinion about this feature removal. I’ll be happy to hear your comments and discussions below.
Thank you
Happy guiding
Cheers
This is really interesting news!
I agree that Maps should stay focused on contributions rather than turning into another social media. Thanks for sharing this update!
I also agree with you 100 percent. I am on iOS so I wonder if it’s a question of android-iOS. It could also be a question of synchronization. Anyway it’s been removed at my ends.
I´m also in iOS @SholaIB and i can still see my followers and following.. i can even see yours, haha - 5,871 followers/34 following, isn´t it?.
Anyway, maybe when october starts they all will be gone.
Same as @LightRich, I still see the followers. Even though, I have some people in my list I know, I don’t really “follow” them and never cared who follows me
