Milford Sound (Maori name Piopiotahi) National Park, is the largest and most beautifully preserved fjord. It has not been spoiled by human civilization as a natural heritage. When it rains, there will be many “temporary waterfalls”. These waterfalls pour down from the cliff surface, some up to 1,000 meters. Known as “The Eighth Wonder of the World” by British writer Rudyard Kipling. Milford Sound is a glacial river formed during the long ice age. It is formed by long-term dripping through rocks, and its deepest point is 265 meters away from Mitre Peak. We were totally in awe of nature’s beauty.
Milford Sound is the largest and most famous fjord in the Fiordland National Park of New Zealand. The river extends 22km inland. The water surface of the fjord intersects the cliff vertically, and the glacier is cut into a V-shaped section. After the canyon sinks, the present landscape is formed. Almost all large and small waterfalls can be seen in all mountain streams. On the cliffs, the large and small waterfalls are dangling or roaring and form a beautiful natural symphony. The most famous waterfall is Sutherland Falls, which is located on Milford Sound, with a total drop of 580 meters, which is among the best in the world.
Roaming in this fjord, I saw mountains surrounded by cliffs, thousands of cliffs, waterfalls and springs, and glaciers, giving people an infinite beauty. The 14 fjords on the west coast have a total length of 44 km and a depth of 500 meters. The fjords on the south coast are longer and the estuary is wider. There are also many small islands in between, and the scenery is totally out of this world.
Whether rainy or sunny, Milford Sound will show picturesque beauty. The peaks on both sides of the fjord stood in the deep water, straight into the sky, and the waterfall poured down from the steep cliff. Milford Sound is the most convenient fjord in New Zealand.
We had a cruise in Milford Sound. The breathtaking beauty of nature’s wonder totally blew us away. Green mountains were small, when the cruise came closer, the peaks are overwhelmingly larger than life. Blue sky and blue sea - it was just picture perfect. We saw other cruises, kayaker, and marine mammals such as seals. The waterfalls are so close that they splashed on our cruise. It was a trip we will never forget!
@AdamGT has a post about the waterfalls.
@TheEagleEye is a veteran traveller in the South Island
@PaulPavlinovich cruise Milford Sound as well, on a cloudy day with an absolutely different scene.
@JordanSB also visited Milford Sound.
