The difference between Indian "Republic Day" & Indian "Independence day" - TravellerG

#TeamIndia Post No: 76

Dear Global LG Friends,

Greetings of Indian Republic Day from the Local Guides Community of India.

India celebrates Independence Day on 15 August, the day India got freedom from the British Raj Rule in 1947 and celebrates Republic Day on 26 January when the Indian Constitution came into force from 1950.

In other words, on August 15th 1947, India got the freedom from British Rule and on 26th January 1950, India became the Independent Democratic Republic through a Constitution.

India came under the British Rule in 1858 and got independence, after years of struggle, through ā€˜non-violence movement’ guided by Mahatma Gandhi. On 15th August 1947 (midnight) India got its independence from the British Raj (when the Monarc was George VI and Governor-General was Mountbatten).

At that time, the Laws (Constitution) were based on the modified colonial rules only. Immediately after the independence, a ā€˜Drafting Committee’ (with Dr B R Ambedkar) as chairman was appointed to draft a permanent constitution for India.

Although a draft constitution was presented on 4 November 1947, it underwent many deliberations and modifications. And finally, on 24 January 1950, the Assembly signed two handwritten copies of the constitution, one in Hindi and another in English; the constitution came into effect throughout the whole nation, two days later on 26th of January.

The President is the ceremonial head of Republic of India and the Commander-in-chief of the Indian Armed Forces. The first President of India was Dr Rajendra Prasad and the current president is Ram Nath Kovind. On the eve of Republic Day, the President addresses the nation.

India’s first Prime Minister was Jawaharlal Nehru who was a prominent politician and a close friend of Mahatma Gandhi. The current Prime Minister of India is Narendra Modi. The Prime Minister addresses the nation on Independence day.

The President is responsible to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution while the prime minister heads the elected government.

Mahatma Gandhi is the father of the Nation.

The Republic of India is a country in South Asia:

  1. The most populous democracy in the world,
  2. The second-largest populous country, and
  3. The seventh-largest country by land area.

Note:
Although not celebrated elaborately, 26 November is known as Constitution Day or National Law Day in India.

@TravellerG

The sad truth is that Indians are still under mental slavery.

Workers perform only when they know a supervisor is around, watching them, and not as their duty.

People obey traffic rules only when the policeman is around, watching them, and not a duty.

The ugly fact is that merchants grab the days as occasions to sell more and decorate shops with the tricolor - which is ridiculous IMO.

Most humbly I want to state that the dignity of the tricolor is faded with such gestures.

It’s really hurting - I agree…

It’s high time - but what to do… even law binding citizens are losing confidence…
