The DeepMaal Lamp Pillar in the Vitthal-Rukhmini Temple of Pune

This post is inspired by the amazing photos of DeepMaal shared by @AjitThite in this post.

Ajit mentioned Deepmaal as a resounding feature of Maharashtrian Temple Architecture.
Indeed!

I remembered my visit to the Vitthal-Rukhmini Temple not very long ago.
The DeepMaal pillar is prominently visible upon entering a temple.

The one in this temple in the Aundh area of Pune has its dedicated platform.
Built in black basalt rock with white mortar, it looks beautiful.

I will visit here at night and try to take a photo with the glowing lamps.

The photo below shows another metal lamp pillar made with electric lamps installed.

The DeepMaal lamp pillars are decorated with lamps on the occasion of Hindu festivals like Diwali, ShivRatri, NavRatri, and Ganesh Chaturthi.

Great, what is impressive about the deepmala is, its stature as stand-alone structure and a cultural aura it carries. Nice photo, @TusharSuradkar .

Thanks for sharing with us.

Cheers!

Thank you @AjitThite for your precious comments :+1:

I am also curious to know if the metal DeepStambh also has a cultural significance or is a mere facility in place of a Stone DeepStambh?

This is seen in the second photo in the post above - on the right side of the entrance.

Hello @TusharSuradkar ji, The DeepMaal in the first photo looks beautiful. Nowadays,Temples are bright with lots of electrical lights on special days. But DeepMaal still looks beautiful.

Hi @TusharSuradkar

Our Temples are unique in their own style. Thanks for sharing the tradition of this Temple. Short and sweet post. Is this a very ancient Temple?

I am curious to see the pillar with lamps glowing.

Thank you for the appreciation, dear @MrAdityaKumar

Someday I’d also like to know the meaning of the various Shloks in your signature in common language

I understand the one in bold

शीलं परं भूषणम्"

Integrity is the ultimate ornament.

Hope I am close to the meaning…

Completely agree :handshake:

Irrespective of the artificial lighting and decorations, the DeepMaal holds its special place in a temple.

I too remember the metallic lamp posts in various temples in Bengaluru @AjitThite , though I was surprised to see several churches erecting those.

Completely agree that our temples are unique in many ways.

I am also curious about how the DeepMaal and the electric lamp post look at night.

Will definitely visit there in the evening to capture the views in illumination of the lamps :diya_lamp:

Thank you for the appreciation @SaylliWalve1

That is an interesting question - I will research it - the origins of DeepMaal :+1:

Though I think @AjitThite may have a clue.

And definitely - I am going there again soon - the next ‘Shravani Somvar’, when I guess they would put up the lamps - certainly :diya_lamp: :diya_lamp: :diya_lamp: :diya_lamp:
