I passed by the Covenant-First Presbyterian church on my visit to the Duke Energy Convention Center in Cincinnati. It is located in the heart of downtown and only a couple of blocks away from the famous Fountain Square.
The Covenant First Presbyterian Church is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church of the United States that has a reverence for tradition and relevance. It stands for “Connecting and equipping congregations to bear witness to the overwhelming hope, audacious joy, and contagious love of Jesus Christ”.
History
Two churches, the First Presbyterian and Covenant Presbyterian merged in 1933 to become the Covenant First Presbyterian Church. On January 29, 1973, the church’s historic building was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
On way to the church from the Fountain Square side, one can see this impressive statue of William Henry Harrison who was an American military officer and politician who served as the ninth president of the United States in 1841.
My Impression
The building architecture captivated my mind since it is a unique and beautiful Gothic-style church constructed, facing Piatt Park. The church building stands apart from the surrounding modern structures and made of hand-cut stone from the quarries.
The unusual interior arrangement is said to have its origin in the seventeenth-century Gothic tithing barns of the Scottish-English border country.
The pulpit furniture was carved from black walnut by Henry L. Fry.
